Drilling into concrete wall

I've been trying to hang pictures up in my house. There's not a single plasterboard wall so I bought a drill and watched a YouTube video. It looks so easy in the video but the two times I've tried all I've achieved is two really wide holes that don't hold a single rawl plug. My cordless drill bounces up and down endlessly. I'm quite strong so I don't know why I'm having this issue. Please help. I refuse to admit defeat until I've learnt.

You need masonry drill bits, and preferably a drill with a hammer action.

As above - what kind of drill bit are you using and what size?

BounceyB · 01/05/2023 21:01

Any recommendations for a masonry drill?

A concrete wall, not brick?

Are you confident there is no asbestos?

DeWalt or Erbauer for drill bits are usually grand; What drill bits were you using to start with OP?

Firstly, I'd check the drill bit is the right type for drilling into masonry. Modern HHS drill bits are multi purpose so will be fine with concrete. If it's old it'll need to be a masonry bit. It sounds like the bit you're using could be too big. It needs to be the same diameter of the plug as it'll expand when you insert the screw which will make it secure. Ideally you need a drill with hammer feature. You'd then twist the head to the hammer symbol. This should get through concrete with ease.

I'm no stranger to power tools but have one wall here which I just couldn't get any holes in. I was recommended this and have barely needed to use a drill since for hanging pictures.

Every single one of our new build walls are masonry. It’s so so annoying.
think you need a hammer action drill maybe, and masonry bits.
I’m fine with woodworking and stuff but My husband does any drilling in our walls as I think I’d just make a mess it looks really hard.

Believeitornot · 01/05/2023 21:23

Try a hammer action drill and decent masonry drill bits. Does your drill have a hammer symbol on it? I also had to buy decent quality drill bits.

if you’re able to make holes, but they’re too wide then you need to start with smaller holes (I’d use a narrow drill bit) and work your way up.

You need some masonry bits and a hammer drill. Go a size smaller than the plugs too, so they won’t be too loose.

Wife has just had me hanging many pictures in our house, so it’s all fresh in my head!

Use masonry drill bits and a hammer drill. If you don't have one then best get an 'SDS' type.

When drilling a hole, start with a small drill bit then work you way up - so if you need an 8mm hole maybe start with a 5mm still first then enlarge the hole once it's the right depth.
