Living Room layout (floor plan included)

Hi All,

Looking for some suggestions on how to lay out our living room…

It’s 12x16ft and annoyingly has a door bang in the middle of one of the long walls (the door can't be moved, so we have to work with the room how it is).

We are planning on getting new sofa(s) and furniture, so it's a completely blank canvas.

The other half is happy for me to have free reign with the house décor, but he has one stipulation… the TV must be wall mounted.

How would you best use and lay out this room?

Thanks for any input 😊

What will you be using the room for other than watching tv?
Will there be a dining table in there?
Is there a focal point?

How many people will be using it?

We got rid of doors in some areas. Just had big openings. Re hang door to open outwards. Not into the room.

Could you replace the door with a surface mounted sliding door or a door curtain?
How many do you need to seat and what will you use the room for other than TV?
Hosting/board games/reading/chilling/craft etc?

It is sort of like our sitting room except our window is on the long wall. We have an L shaped couch on what would be your window and garage walls and the TV on the short blank wall. Ours is on a TV unit but it could be wall mounted. We have coffee tables at each end of the sofas and a footstool in the middle . It works very well.

@KirstenBlest It's our main living room (2 adults & 1 DC), primarily used for relaxing, entertaining, watching TV & playing with our DC (toys are stored elsewhere so we don't need storage in this room).

There will be no dining table, and there is no focal point other than a large window which outlooks the front of the property.

@trickyex We did consider changing the door to a sliding one to give us a bit more usable space, I think that would work quite well.

There's just 3 of us, and we use the room for TV, socialising with friends, TV and playing games/puzzles with out DC (usually on the floor).

@ApolloandDaphne Thank you for replying :) that sounds like a good setup. I was a bit unsure about having the TV opposite the window in case there was a glare, but it's north facing so it might not be too much of an issue.

Thanks. Was asking in case you had 4 6-foot tall teenagers or something.

Where would you put the telly?
I wouldn't get an L-shaped sofa because I don't like them, but it could work at yours.

We have a very small window high up opposite the tv. It is west facing and catches the evening sun so we have a blind we can pull down to stop the glare. Our big window is north facing and absolutely no sunshine comes directly in that window.

I'd have it like this I think. Big L shaped sofa in front of the TV at one end and another sofa with coffee table near the window for reading/doing jigsaws etc.

I agree with GGB, that set up works well and give you space for TV watching but also space for books and a table surface for games/puzzles/coffee etc, which makes it really multifunctional
Maybe add some plug in wall lights for cosiness as you might not have room for table or floor lamps
Look up Emily Henderson as she is an expert on family room layouts and gives good advice on her blog and SM.
