Removing mould from grouting and around bath

I have tried all the natural things recommended like lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda, vinegar etc in desperation tried lots of other stuff( a bit like Marge Simpson using peanut butter to remove chewing gum from Lisa’s hair) all to no avail. Have brought some stuff sold specifically for that purpose which said it erased black mould but it didn’t. Tried to cover up with a thing like a tipped pen I bought in a hardware shop too.
Despite appearances the bath is cleaned after use but not dried is that the problem?

I don’t think natural removal will work on the silicone strip. You might have to remove it and re silicone if you only want to use natural.
The grout isn’t very mouldy by the looks of it, although it is discoloured, probably from soap/bodies natural oils. A good bleach and scrub with a toothbrush or something should get that off.

If you want to get rid of the mould try Astonish.
Spray it on then lay toilet roll strips on top then spray again and leave the drenched toilet roll in place as long as possible, over night if you can, it really does work.

I read reviews on all these wonder products, all awful

Get the old sealant and grout removed and redone

It's the only way to get it perfect

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 29/04/2023 13:21

Sadly when mould is embedded in silicone sealant I think the only thing you can do is remove it and reseal it. The grout should come up white with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and washing up liquid applied with a toothbrush.

FrenchandSaunders · 29/04/2023 13:22

Spray bleach on and leave for a while then scrub with a toothbrush. It will improve it a lot but won’t get rid completely. Grout needs replacing.

Paperbagsaremine · 29/04/2023 13:24

Try bleach squirted along the manky bits with looroll on top to hold it on.
Failing that, replace, and (my plumber told us this) dry off the sealant after use - mould doesn't grow in the dry.

goingtotown · 29/04/2023 13:31

Wear rubber gloves. Bleach soaked in loo roll pushed into the grout. More bleach after an hour, leave for 24 hours.
I found Domestos bleach stronger than supermarket own brand.

Thiscrackisverymoreish · 29/04/2023 13:36

Make a paste of bleach and bicarb. - 6 teaspoons of bicarb. Put it on, leave overnight if it's really bad. I usually use a toothbrush to really get in there and rinse off in the morning it really works.

TheThirdKit · 29/04/2023 13:40

BingT Mould remover gel off Amazon. From China I think, probably lethal but my god it works wonders. I de-moulded an entire bath & shower unit, and it was bad, this stuff cleared it all after a two hour soak and didn't damage the silicon one bit.

daretodenim · 29/04/2023 14:48

First of all there are two names. The discoloured bits between the tiles is grouting. The mouldy strip along the bath is the silicon.

The grouting can be cleaned by a really good scrub. You can get grouting brushes that have a straight and curved line of hard bristles. First step is to go to town on the grouting.

Next up is the mould on the silicon. If you've tried scrubbing and it's not coming off then you need to re-silicon the edge of the bath. You can pay someone to do this, or watch one of the many YouTube videos.

I did it last year. If you want to give that a go, then you need to be fastidious about getting all traces of the old silicon away and the area being bone dry and grease free before you put the new silicon on. This is partly also why you need to clean the grouting first, because that reduces the grease around the silicon. You also need to replace the entire line of silicon, not only the mouldy section - any joins are opportunities for moisture and then mould re growth. It's a time consuming job but not unmanageably hard.

I can't remember the videos I watched by there are lots out there.

mrsm43s · 29/04/2023 15:37

The grouting can be cleaned up by a good scrub with cif etc. If you scrub it ongoing once every few weeks it'll stay white.

The silicon needs removing and redoing.

mewkins · 29/04/2023 15:40

I think cut out the old silicone and redo. Not too bad a job. The only way to keep silicone mould free is to wipe water away after use (yes I am the sad person that does this). The grout should come up with a bicarb paste.

Yiayoula · 29/04/2023 15:45

Dettol Antibacterial Mould and Mildew Remover Spray ( bought after it was recommended on here) was brilliant at removing the grot from the grout .
It brightened up the silicon temporarily, but long term it’s best to replace .

Persipan · 29/04/2023 15:49

That 'mould magic' stuff is genuinely pretty good. Not quite so magic as its advertising would have you believe, but it really does make a big difference.

Helenahandkart · 29/04/2023 16:30

2nd vote for the Dettol stuff, though it won’t do the silicone

CherryTreeBloom · 29/04/2023 18:58

Does tile grout erode over time?

I recently had a guy replace the silicone around the bath. But he said he could not do anything about the discoloured grouting because it was too thin.

I don’t think he was angling for a tiling job by the way!

lovemycbf · 29/04/2023 19:36

HG mould spray is brilliant at making the grout white again it may lift the sealant but it does look like it might need replacing

Thepooroldwolfisdead · 29/04/2023 23:35

Kitchen roll, folded up carefully, soaked in bleach and placed over the sealant.leave in place till next day. There is a video on YouTube. It really works. I've used this in the bathroom & on various windows with great results, all other products are useless.

crouchingpheasant · 29/04/2023 23:46

Third vote for Dettol Antibacterial Mould and Mildew Remover Spray. Sorted out all of my mouldy grout in one application. Bathroom looked like new again!

BunnyFun · 29/04/2023 23:57

HG mould is the best.

Honeysuckle16 · 30/04/2023 00:26

Thick gel bleach will remove mould on silicon if it’s poured onto kitchen roll then pressed firmly on the silicon to hold it in place. Leave for 24 hours.

For mould on grout, scrub it with a green scrubbing pad and Cif. Any stubborn bits need the bleach treatment.

Using bleach will save having to re-grout in most cases. However, if the silicon is breaking up, then it needs re-done.

almostwarm · 30/04/2023 00:40

BunnyFun · 29/04/2023 23:57

HG mould is the best.

I agree.
I would just remove and replace the silicone though.

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 01:10

A steam jet will get rid of it.
