Anyone with an outward-opening bathroom door

Our family bathroom is ridiculously tiny and it's occurred to me that if we re-hang the door to open into the landing it might make the room feel larger.

Has anyone done this or live in a house where this is the arrangement? How does it work in practice? I've noticed that lots of tiny downstairs toilets have the door opening into the hallway and I've never seen a collision!

I live with an epileptic so inwards is preferable because it’s easier to force the door. I’m amazed at the healthcare professional pp as her description of it being better for emergency access is exactly the opposite of my understanding. What about two smaller doors that lock in the middle?

A modern bathroom door lock should be capable of opening from the outside in an emergency with a screw driver, coin or knife. All our bathroom doors have this type of lock. We also have outward opening doors in case someone who is ill has fallen against the door.

@Beebumble2 most people can fit a lock with a way of opening it from the outside, but not every door CAN open outwards. However half doors might work for those with tight spaces. As discussed up thread I can flip my door to open outwards however I was advised to have it open inwards. I believe opening outwards would be better for us so will probably do that as soon as I can afford it. Hth

Have you thought about a sliding door?

I had to think about that, our downstairs loo door opens outwards, it’s never been an issue, I’d never even thought about it till now.

Totally agree 🙌

never even thought about it

Yep did this 2 years ago made such a difference 🙂

I've only just realised that both my bathroom doors open outwards GrinBlush never thought about it before!
Pic attached, both rooms are too small really to open inwards and they have the locks you can open from the outside

Have you thought about a sliding door?

Yes, that's another possibility but it would be more work than simply changing the door orientation and I wondered whether a sliding door might draw attention to something being different, iyswim.

Really interesting that it seems to be no issue in practice because when I Googled it seemed like a massive non-no!

Maybe it’s to do with the distance from door to obstacle inside? If you have a loo/bath/basin less than a body distance away obviously there’s going to be jamming.

Our en-suite in the loft conversion has a bifold kind of arrangement on it to minimise the space needed for the door to open into either room, and our downstairs loo has a pocket sliding door.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 01/05/2023 18:43

Our en-suite and also the downstairs toilet have doors which open outwards. I hadn’t actually considered this until I read your post!

Tiny bathroom & tiny downstairs loo both doors open outwards makes a huge difference in being able to access the rooms & maximise space no issues upstairs as fairly wide landing the D/S loo is tighter but no one has ever been knocked out by the door, go for it makes so much sense in very small rooms.
