Anyone who has a LONG north facing garden, can you tell me a little bit about what times of the day/how much sun do you actually get in your garden? Considering buying a house with a N facing garden but concerned about how dark it will be in the garden..

Ours doesn’t get the sun on the back till lunchtime . It’s more that the house feels very cold and dark and the sun never shines in the north facing side. That is enough to put most people off.

If it's long enough will it not get light at the far end most of the day?

Here are some pictures of my garden in the afternoon. It is north west facing. The whole house is gorgeously light as the front is south east facing, and we have a thru lounge diner. Nothing in mine is dark at all. The garden is in full sun in the height of summer by lunch time (may-sept).
The only area that stays in shade is right by our patio doors, and along the left hand fence.

Our garden is north-east facing and as the poster above, it gets plenty of sun in the summer months, starting near the house and working its way down the garden as the day progresses. Also as above, the front of the house is south facing so flooded with light.
The winter months are pretty low on direct sun in the garden which means our lawn is usually a bit of a mess by spring but quickly bounces back.

We have a north facing garden. It’s not particularly long and due to position of houses doesn’t get much sun in the winter months, but is now getting more sun (when it comes out!)oat of the garden gets sun in the summer and the patio by the house gets the evening sun. Our kitchen is at the back of the house and keeps cool in the summer. Our lounge is at the front so gets the summer sun.

Had a south facing garden at our previous house. It was too hot to sit out in during most of the day, and too hot to use the conservatory.

Both types of garden have their pros and cons

The end by the house doesn't get much but we sit at the end during the summer and it's lovely. From that side it's a south facing garden.
Either side also gets a decent amount of light and there are lots of plants that don't like full Sun. If you're not overlooked at the end you'll be fine.

Ours is about 150 foot and most of it gets sun all day (even with trees in the neighbouring gardens. In the hot spell last year, we was able to sit on part of our patio in shade.

North east facing long garden here. Gets loads of sun.

How tall is the house and does it have anything else to cast a shadow like large trees, very high fence etc?

We don't get much on the patio nearest house in depth of winter but my washing line half way up is in sun all year round (and that's more useful as I don't sit out on my patio much in December but dry outside year round).

I have a decking area part way up and another bench further back so lots of choice of places to sit but they are pretty much all in sun all day in summer.

The back of house gets lovely afternoon/evening sun from march onwards.

How tall are any fences/hedges, and how wide is it? That's a big part of how much light you get, esp in the winter months.
