Do I need to mist coat a wall that was plastered 7 months ago?

Or can I just go straight in with a layer of normal paint?

Personally I’d seal it with a pva / paint mix

Absolutely mist coat I'm afraid - super important step after fresh plaster to ensure the paint doesn't just flake / peel off in future

Do not use pva on it whatever you do. Water down the emulsion about 70/30 and slap that on and then paint as normal.

Ah ok. I thought I could get away with it as it would have dried out 😄

Its not about drying out. It's about sealing the surface so the paint adheres well.

We’ve just had a load of plastering done. The plasterer said we could use Leystone paint from B&Q as a mist coat - but just use it straight from the tub. It’s called super opaque paint or something?

Screwedupworld · 23/04/2023 18:58

100% mist coat it

If not too late!

100 % mist coat, and consider a paint sprayer, lots of masking up but you can paint an entire room in 15 minutes, which when you might need to do three coats is way quicker.

@Sunny24 the paint spiders recommended I think is this Leyland paint, you can get it from B&Q or Screwfix.

Don't water it down, goes straight on the wall full strength. You will be amazed at how well it covers with just one coat. I have been using this stuff for years on brand new plaster or as a base coat to go over darker paints. I like to decorate.

As it is a trade paint in only comes in massive heavy tubs but honestly it is incredible. I use it for ceilings too.

This emulsion paint is suitable for and covers 13m² per litre on average.

Personally I'd always seal with Zinser Gards, then prime before painting.
