Mid Terrace - no rear access

I might well be an idiot asking this but I live in the middle of an Edwardian terrace and there's absolutely no rear access.

If I wanted to get some building work done (thinking of something like extending a kitchen ) is it feasible knowing the front door is the only access?

Depends on what exactly you want done. Is there a straight through route from front to back (ie could you get scaffolding poles through? ? Ultimately yes there will be a way but it may add £££ and you may have a lot of mess trailed through

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/04/2023 19:12

Do you have outside space at the rear? It is useful (and secure) if they can store materials there, but other than things like scaffolding or RSJs generally things can be (wo)manhandled through - it just increases the time and cost.

We did it, everything came through the house, but that's quite usual where I live as there are a lot of terraced houses

BananaPie · 22/04/2023 19:18

entirely possible. But foundations will need to be dug by hand (unlikely to get a digger through your house) which will add to the cost.

Do you not have access rights through the neighbours' garden/s?

spiggydit · 23/04/2023 11:19

Many thanks for the helpful replies

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles Yes plenty of space in the garden for materials etc

@CharlotteStreetW1 There was historical access via an very small alleyway two doors down but over the years it's been lost via overgrown gardens etc. it would require quite a lot of careful negotiation to restore

Consider the additional costs of redecorating your entire hallway after having everything trudged through your hallway - it’ll soon make clearing the alley a cost effective solution OP!
