Fitted wardrobes

Anyone had these lately? Trying to get an idea on price. There are a few companies around such as Sharp and Hammonds but I’m thinking I could go local if I can find someone.

are they really expensive? Building them ourselves is a non starter!

Yes, they're really expensive unfortunately, we are quoted £7,000! I know you say you can't build them but could you assemble them? The Pax range from Ikea has hundreds of variables that can fit most situations. It's a two person DIY job that might take a while but not overly complicated- there's lots of tutorials on YouTube. Ikea have a planner on their website in which you enter the room dimensions and work out what various elements you'd need. Frankly, even if you bought them and paid someone to assemble them for you it would still be much cheaper! I've had these wardrobes in the past and they're really good- there's lots of good reviews of them on Mumsnet if you dig around in the history.

Yes they are expensive, I used Hammonds, I think it was 4 grand for a wall of wardrobes, they are fantastic though, I also had a number of local tradesmen quote but the price wasn’t too far off and the quality not so good.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/04/2023 09:38

I paid £2000 about 3 tears ago with a local company. It was built in rather than fitted. And they just altered improved what was already there. I won't ever line in a house without a built in wardrobe again.

Lovestodrinkmilk · 19/04/2023 10:42

I had a quote from one of these companies (I can't remember which) and their expert design was clearly more about fitting in as many items as possible, not making a good design. Also they refused to provide a proper plan with accurate measurements. The wardrobes are 'fitted' in the sense of screwed to the wall (is that even a good thing?), but not necessarily 'made to measure'. I had to really push to get the designer to include non-standard sizes. Didn't go ahead and still have the excellent but ancient DIY Hygena bedroom furniture.

The modern fitted units are really large compared with the old MFI or Hygena ones from way back. Most ordinary houses actually don't have enough space for them really.

These sorts of companies tend to offer 'free' fitting, which means you have to pay the whole cost up front. Then, if you aren't satisfied with the fitting, well, what do you do?

Can you tell I'm not keen?

I think getting a local fitter to do it is better. Agree an accurate plan. Pay for the wardrobes up front if necessary, but only pay for the fitting on satisfactory completion of the work. I mean, this stuff is standard when you have, for instance, a kitchen fitted.

That really wasn’t my experience, I paid a deposit and the rest after and the wardrobes were designed to my specification, needs and rhe space available.

Lovestodrinkmilk · 19/04/2023 10:46

@Bambooflowers oh, that's good to hear, maybe they've cleaned up their acts recently.

Bambooflowers · 19/04/2023 10:54

Mine also had to be very narrow in parts due to the window and door, so they built the two central units as step out and wider and the end units narrower, all was manufactured to the spec agreed, this was about 5 years ago. I also have high ceilings and it was built to that height as I wished it. With the internal configuration to my design. Drawers, shelves and also the clothes rails, in the narrower parts they come out facing me, in the wider parts like a normal wardrobe. The doors etc to my spec and wirh handles or soft close and handle less and the mirrors where I wished them,

they draw it all on some software so you can see exactly what it will look like and the different materials and ways you may think of. It took about 3 hours for the designer.

as said fhey then go and cut it all to spec and then it’s fitted. Hence why it costs so much.

We were very happy with Hammond. We got quotes from them and Sharps but Sharps were very limited in what they could do with an awkward room whereas Hammond customised everything to work and Sharps were a lot more expensive. Hammond were cheaper plus there were lots of extras such as mirrored doors and dressing table inserts etc.

We chose their most expensive range for our bedroom and it cost about £6,500 (including a run of wardrobes in a dressing room) but we chose a cheaper range for dd's room (the awkward one) which cost about £3,000.

Ariela · 19/04/2023 11:35

Do not have these fitted on an outside wall, they'll invariably eventually cause damp in the cupboards as the outer wall is cooler, it allows condensation. Your company quoting won't care. Beware that the quotes will come in hideously expensive and in fact they're just a finance company selling fitted bedrooms. I think you can do far far better with Ikea adaptions and a decent joiner if not prepared/able to do a bit of DIY.
We went for Sharps in a rush due to needing something quickly, and always regretted it.

Comefromaway · 19/04/2023 11:36

Our joiner refuses to fit anything from Ikea, he hates their furniture with a passion!

Thanks all

I know this is an old thread so I hope you got your fitted wardrobes done and are happy with them. We used a local carpentry company called MJ Kloss Carpentry. They were super friendly and Carlos our carpenter did an amazing job. He fitted wardrobes on either side of our chimney breast in the bedroom.

I came across this post when looking for someone to fit some, so thought it might others who come across it. :)

Cumberlandgap · 27/09/2024 06:49

We did thanks! Used a local joiner in the end.

Can anyone share details of the local joiner and @2KidDad did this company complete work on time and on budget.

That was for a run of 6 doors, making up two singles and two doubles, with hanging space in the doubles, and a combination of drawers and shelving in the singles. Then on another wall is another wardrobe, a small slanted double wardrobe built into the eaves, with one half as hanging space, and the other half as shelving.

Yes, a senior carpenter came around and measured up and costed it. Then Carlos, who did the work, came punctually every day and the job was finished on schedule. Which is refreshing :)

Sorry, I know this is an old post but would anyone mind sending pictures of their Hammonds wardrobes. I am thinking of going with them but don't find they have many pictures online. Thanks
