We have an L shaped garden and half of it looks lovely, but the other half is just lawn surrounded by an ugly wall. I just can’t decide what to do with it. Maybe plant some tallish plants around the border of the lawn? Or a climber up the wall?

I’m a terrible gardener and would really appreciate your ideas!

I also think that wall is really attractive but I'd still break it up with some taller plants, Holly jocks, roses... Those are fruit trees that area strapped to the wall wouid look beautiful. Great back drop and give heat to fruit

We need to remember that the OP says she is a terrible gardener and that digging up the grass ,creating a border and planting a number of plants might be too ambitious .

Wow, thank you all so much for the ideas! You’ve helped me feel excited about tackling this area!

I do absolutely love hydrangea Annabelle’s and have a good track record with those. I also love the idea of an ornamental tree in the centre of the lawn and/or the trained fruit trees! I agree that a varied border would be great. I really like the pre-made border ideas, because that’s where I feel like a terrible gardener. I do lots of research to create a border with year round interest and I never quite pull it off. This is our new house, so I’m keen to get it right. I really appreciate the specific plant and tree suggestions. :) it’s a pretty sunny and sheltered space.

That could be a real feature , some good ideas already . Very envious.

Make a small border, with stones. Then put different sized pots with flowers, trees etc.

If you plant too close to a wall the roots may lift the wall in time.

Love the wall! I sense from the angle the space is overlooked, so I'd definitely plant a couple of trees and maybe a bush. I personally wouldn't take up lawn space with a whole border, unless you don't use the lawn.

I think the best thing to do to create a border that looks good through the year is to dig it, prepare it, improve the soil, and go and visit the garden centre once a month for a year, or once the last thing you've bought stops being interesting, and buy a thing that takes your fancy and looks nice - while checking how big it grows (eyes up several things I've bought on a whim and are now quite big).

And you can't go wrong with bulbs - especially alliums. Love an allium.

I like your wall! My garden has a seriously ugly wall but it is now partially at least covered by wisteria and jasmine.

EffortlessDesmond · 19/04/2023 20:23

It is a lovely brick built wall. Softened with plants, it will deliver a pretty sitting out space, a bit more privacy and maybe some fruit in time. I would also be thinking about espaliered fruit trees with bulbs underneath and some summer flowering annuals. You may only have shown part of it, but I reckoned it was only a maximum of 35m in total, and probably rather less, so it's not the Forth Road Bridge.
