Sheffield or Leeds

Hello,

Looking to buy my first home and considering Sheffield or Leeds.

I am 40, two kids ages 8 and 4, and these areas look affordable/close to a lot of green outdoors activities/scenery.

I went to uni in Sheffield but that’s 20 years ago and wouldn’t know where is good or to avoid. Same with Leeds - only ever had days/nights out.

Budget isn’t a consideration right now, but more focused on location. Good schools, green rather than suburban if possible and decent travel infrastructure (not driving the kids everywhere when they’re older).

Grateful for any suggestions to help me as I can’t tell on Rightmove where is good or not (bar the prices!).

Thanks

I don't know Sheffield so well, but Leeds is nice, especially North Leeds towards Harrogate. Leeds have a better football team also 👍

Agree with above poster re Leeds. Fulwood in Sheffield is nice, leafy and not that far away from Endcliffe Park and the Botanical Gardens and you have Porters Brook on the doorstep.

Geneticsbunny · 18/04/2023 07:42

What is your budget?

WuTangGran · 18/04/2023 09:11

Can’t help with Leeds, but Sheffield is where we’ve been looking-basically the western side of the city is near the Peak District and has good bus and rail connections.

Personally I’d say Leeds, if you can afford the nicer bits, Chapel Allerton/Meanwood etc

NorthernDuckling · 18/04/2023 17:58

Leeds is great, you probably want to look at north leeds - horsforth, cookridge, adel, alwoodley, roundhay, chapel allerton (chapel a is closer to the city centre but not far from roundhay park). All these places have good schools and access to countryside/green space. Horsforth/ cookridge have easy access to horsforth train station but all the other locations would be a bus - public transport in Leeds could be better!

if budget is no problem, have you considered ilkley? Transport is great and the schools are really good, it’s right on the edge of Yorkshire dales so gives you the outdoor lifestyle, it has easy access to Leeds on the train, it is very pricy though and full of Londoners that relocated in covid.

Sheffield has hills. Lots of them.

I like Leeds more!

North Leeds lovely but buses dreadful. Great for proximity to the Dales etc.

Level75 · 18/04/2023 21:09

What sort of vibe are you looking for?
North Leeds is good - Far Headingley, Weetwood, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Horsforth. Further out Shadwell. Closer in Meanwood. All have different pros and cons.

Generally Leeds is a good city with fantastic links to the countryside.

But houses are not that cheap really - unless you're moving from central London. What's your budget and what do you want house and garden wise?

Screwedupworld · 18/04/2023 22:25

Leeds either like east Leeds but to place like temple newsam/whitkirk/Colton or north Leeds like chapel alferton/allwoodly/roundhay

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/04/2023 23:20

I know both cities. The nice bits come at a cost in both!

My preference would be Sheffield S10/11 area,a hop and a skip into the Peak District.

Thank you!

My budget is a consideration, but I didn’t want it to be the focus of the thread.

I am going for a gander at those areas. Ilkley sounds ideal as do parts of sheffield due to better transport.

Ilkley is lovely but you might get bored if wanting city life on your doorstep. Yes to North Leeds Alwoodley, Shadwell, area as have the best of both worlds -
