Help me pimp my fence!

Hi, I'm needing privacy and wondering if I can add something to my fence. I do plan on planting a border of plants/conifers eventually, but want to see if I can fill the gaps. I purchased privacy screening but would prefer to do something abit more permanent with wood.
Is it possible to fill the gaps with wood if the flat side of the fence faces me? When I look online it is always on the side with the posts.
Any advice appreciated!

To whom does the fence belong? And what do you mean by " fill in the gaps"? Can you post a photo?

It is a joint boundary fence; it is kind the with vertical slates with gaps inbetween. I have seen people who have similar with the side with posts on their side hammer wooden plankw on it to create privacy. I have the flat 'good side' facing me. I was wondering if anything could be done.

Sorry, there shouldn't be a 'the' and 'planks' not 'plankw'

@WhatASillyPredicament Posts denoting ownership is bollocks, you always need to look at your deeds which if you don't have you can download online. It might be all in one or you may need the extra schedule, mine has 2, one which just shows the house location the other has all the covenants and restrictions etc on it.

I am assuming you mean that the horizontal rails are on your neighbour's side and you have vertical boards on your side attached to those rails but there are gaps in between each board meaning there is no privacy, or that you neighbour also has boards on their side that are offset to yours but again no privacy as you can still see through the gaps.

It is entirely possibly if the boundary fence is shared to fix wooden battens to your side to fill in the gaps. If you haven't got an impact screwdriver either borrow one or buy one. It is like a hot knife through butter for things like wooden boards. You can buy self tapping screws so no pilot holes needed. You haven't said anything about budget but did you know you can buy 6ft conifers? Also known as instant hedging. You can get laurels, privet etc. Delivery for ours was a pain as it was a long distance away but we have bought mature plants to fill gaps in established hedging. Google is your friend.

So can you attach something to the actual fence posts?

WhatASillyPredicament · 18/04/2023 14:32

Thank you @Verassata you're spot on. The fence is shared, which is why I wanted something just on our side. That sounds great, thank you for the tips on attaching the planks for the gaps. 6 foot ready grown plants sounds amazing, I'm not sure if they would be awkward to plant or not though, I'm not the best at gardening.
It would be so much easier if the posts, and horizontal parts were on my side. The neighbours aren't bothered about privacy and love to sit really close to us, despite their humongous garden.

@WhatASillyPredicament mature plants wise, I have had ones in pots which are heavier and I think harder to plant as the size of the rootball in the soil is bigger, and root balled plants where they come with a hessian sack wrapped round the roots.

You just dig a hole deeper and wider than the roots, stand them in and back fill. The best way to get growth is to use Miracle Grow plant food. I use the container which attaches to a hose pipe, rather than hand mixing it into a watering can. Lots of videos on Youtube for ready made hedges and how to plant them, you can buy plants individually or in ready bags etc. Have a google to see what is out there.

Fence wise, look into planks that are wide enough to cover the gap but also a good overlap for securing them with screws. It will be costly as timber is costly. But you might concentrate on maybe the patio area firstly. Alternatively, you might be able to attach a ready made fence panel to your side. depending on posts etc. Hopefully the fence is in good condition as you will be attaching some weight to it.

Don't just attach wood to existing fence. We have the type of fence you have fir a reason. We had solid fencing before, in high winds it came down repeatedly. The type we have now the wind goes through so it dosnt come down.

@Maggiesgirl very good advice. I think I'll go privacy screening instead, and some plants.
