dark vs light worktops

We're redoing our kitchen, going for a sage green shaker style.
Just can't decide on worktops-torn between a dark, speckly granite (blues in the night) vs a light granite or quartz. I worry dark is really dated, but equally-the light trend has been around for ages, so are we more likely to end up with a passé worktop if we go light? We are not planning on selling anytime soon, but I don't want to regret it!

@Chasingsquirrels - if kitchens were “twinned” like towns are …

dark vs light worktops

I’ve had a dark granite in my home and still have it in my holiday house. No steaks ever. It’s polished and you just wipe it clean. Sometimes use kitchen roll to finish it. Holiday kitchen is 15 years old and still immaculate. Very sunny aspect though.

At home I have a grey/white speckled granite. It’s perfect and easy to clean. We do have softened water and maybe that helps. Old kitchen was black granite and again no issues cleaning whatsoever. Never spilt turmeric either! Occasional lily stamen dropped on it! Comes off easily! Just get high quality granite. It’s not porous and it’s very robust.

Light coloured quartz. Easy to get marks off, including turmeric.

We currently have dark laminate worktops and it’s a fairly dark kitchen and really doesn’t do the room any favours. Just been looking into getting new worktops and I’m favouring a white quartz that has a slight (subtle) speckle to it hoping that it will add more light to the kitchen. Glad to see so many have recommended white quartz for not staining

We have white, but with a grey marbled effect, not pure white, silestone (which I think is just pretty much the same as quartz) worktops and light blue units.

Looks amazing and we’ve never had any issues with stains. We are fairly careful to make sure any curry/red wine etc is wiped up asap, but not obsessive by any means.

Previously had dark granite with a kind of sparkle in a different house and it was nice, although I managed to chip it by the sink with a big pan.

I have mizzle units with Gemini English white, which is slightly off white. Ours is south facing and looks amazing

I think mine is quartz or some sort of stone it was here when I bought the house it’s white with silver flecks. I wouldn’t have chosen it but it’s bloody marvellous everyone who sees it says how nice it looks it’s super easy to clean and I don’t think it will ever look passé (unlike dark granite/stone which I think might look dated every friend we knew in the early 2000s had it) anyway I don’t care if it becomes passé I love it. My house is super modern and very light as I have loads of huge floor to ceiling windows if that makes any difference.
