Hello, wanting to know an approx age for this fire surround please? Terrace house built in 1909 and wondering if anyone could shed light on the surround. We are wanting to install a multi fuel burner but would keep the surround if it’s an old feature. Any help much appreciated, thank you!

90's? It is a reproduction and can be safely burnt if that is what you want to know.

Agree with the PP, looks like a newish reproduction, not dissimilar to one in my living room now. You'd expect to see some old paint that's been stripped at least.

Agree with Genetics, that's a modern reproduction and not an original

Thanks everyone, I’ve seen some lovely wooden surrounds on Facebook market place that are advertised as Edwardian. How can I know if something is a replica or original other than taking the persons word for it?

The wood will show signs of age such as small dents and scratches, possibly paint makers where it was attached to the wall.
But above all acquaint yourself with what original Edwardian fireplaces looked like. If wood they were often stained to look like mahogany, some were even painted to look like faux marble. A tall style that incorporated a over mantle and mirror was also common.

My house is just a few years older than yours and these are a couple of my original surrounds. Some of my neighbours also have ones that include a mirror but overall, they were much simpler designs than Victorian or what you have now.

Whoops!

I have seen these two that I think are lovely. I wasn’t sure whether to post a photo on here as they don’t belong to me, but they don’t have any personal info on and can take the picture down if necessary. I feel the circular mirror looks more authentic due to colour/condition of the wood?

Without seeing it properly I think the little fancy "bough" thing over the top smacks reproduction to me . But if you like the surround apart from that bit , it could probably be chiselled off and you perhaps paint the rest of it if you do not want to replace the whole fireplace

Post a link here and we can check if you like.
Best way to get your eye in is to look at lots of Edwardian interiors. Try searching for edwardian but also arts and crafts which is a particular style within the Edwardian era.

This site does originals and reproduction http://edwardian-fireplaces.co.uk/. The originals have a really distinctive colour, a dark warm brown. It is very hard to replicate in reproduction.

This is a picture of my neighbours (stolen from Rightmove) which had a similar oval mirror to you first picture.

DecemberRolo both those overmantle mirrored fire surrounds look appropriate.
