Typical cost of new bathroom

Apologies if this has been asked already. Had a quick look through previous posts but couldn't see anything.

Our bathroom needs an update. We've been in the house for 16 years and haven't touched it in all that time. We can probably keep the bath, sink & toilet, but flooring, tiling, reboxing in the boiler, taps, shower etc all need replacing. It's a standard sized estate house bathroom. Can anyone give me a rough idea of cost? I don't want to get people round to quote if it's well out of our budget (and I don't want to get my hopes up either!)

We did ours last year and it was 8k - small bathroom, and we're SE commuter belt

Cleoforever · 13/04/2023 15:46

There is no “typical”

but I spent £7.9k on similar amount of work and a mix of mid and high range

also kept the bath and toilet

Stayingstrongish · 13/04/2023 15:48

I've just had a quote for about 8k, tiny bathroom but replacing everything

Curtainpoles · 13/04/2023 15:49

We did ours for about £8k, small bathroom, London / Surrey borders. New everything but didn't move position of shower / bath, toilet, or sink.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 13/04/2023 15:54

Ours came to about 11k for a complete refit including tiling, plastering, painting, building a fitted linen cupboard and brand new loo, basin, bath and shower. Small space but we spent more on the fixtures than we might have done because it’s our only bathroom.

Yorkshire. £5,000 labour plus about £4000 for all the bits toilet etc.

Geneticsbunny · 13/04/2023 16:30

Because it is easier to rip everything out and start again you might find that the labour costs are greater if you ask the fitters to work round the existing bath etc. Might end up cheaper to just rip them all out and start from scratch

vestanesta · 13/04/2023 16:35

We had ours done last year and it was 15k but that was fully project managed by a local independent and included stripped back to brick and a new boiler.

It was very definitely expensive and I chucked cash at it to reduce stress. We could have done similar for under 10 if we'd have managed it ourselves.

harriethoyle · 13/04/2023 16:37

We're in Yorkshire and just about to have ours done for 6.5k all in. New everything but not changing the position of anything

CellophaneFlower · 13/04/2023 16:52

Can you do any of it yourself? Fitting new taps is pretty easy, although it can be a bit awkward under the bath. You could perhaps remove the old tiles and remove the flooring.

If you don't need to replace the suite, I wouldn't. I can't see how ripping out and replacing would be comparable to working around what's there.

BurntWick · 13/04/2023 17:04

As a PP said, there is no 'typical'. You may be able to save money by keeping some of the fittings but the builders may insist on taking them out and refitting after tiling as it makes for an easier and much neater finish. They would be right. But there is a risk that the fittings may get damaged or broken when the builders try to remove them, however careful they are.
Keeping all the fittings in the same position will save a lot of labour costs in rerouting waste and plumbing. Keeping the tiling simple with large tiles eg 600x300 laid in simple patterns will also keep labour costs down. Anything mosaic or herringbone costs more to lay.

We've just had ours done. South east commuter belt. Labour costs were about £250/day ex VAT. Took about 4 weeks which included a LOT of work to cut out and replace joists and rotting woodwork behind a leaky shower which we didn't know about.

mrsbyers · 13/04/2023 17:07

To keep costs down , use the planning services at somewhere like the bath store and then source the items yourself - when I did my large bathroom saved a fortune buying same spec shower cubicle etc from eBay vs bathstore and got a separate tiler : plumber etc which saved more

dowhat · 13/04/2023 18:49

Oh wow, that's much more than I thought. Thanks for all your replies. Think I need to save for a bit longer 😟
