Replacing smsller windows with bigger windows

We have a Victorian terrace and at the back, the two rear windows were at some point replaced with modern (ish) smaller windows. These are terrible and the double glazing is blown in one of them anyway, so they need to be replaced. I'd like to restore the window aperture to the original Victorian proportions. I'm fairly certain the windows are the original width, just shorter than they would have been. (Have measured neighbours windows)

My builders say they can do this, if I order the windows for them to install. They'll then replaster and replace the radiators with lower ones.
I'm just wondering how big of a job this is and how it would work...should I order windows based on the neighbours window dimensions or get the builders to take the brick courses out and then measure the aperture?? But this would mean having no window until it arrived, which might take a while (I'm imagining lead times for windows are as long as everything else).

Or should I just suck it up, live with the awkward dimensions and order windows based on the current aperture (this is what DH thinks).

I would get the builder to measure the aperture, you can still order them but to his dimensions.
