Take legs off sideboard?

I’m probably over thinking this massively…but I’m going to ask anyway.

I’ve got a lovely big sideboard on an amtico lvt floor in the living room. The legs are about 5 inches high. The amount of dust and ‘stuff’ collected underneath it drives me mad and makes an otherwise clean room look dirty unless I get under it every couple of days, as it’s in your line of sight pretty much all the time in that room.

I’m thinking of taking the legs off and having it flat on the floor. Would this look odd to you? Would you even notice it?

I know there are much bigger problems in life but just wondered what people thought. Thank you.

Do you have a picture, not necessarily of yours, but it's difficult to envisage. I think it might look a bit odd.

bilbodog · 13/04/2023 12:31

need a photo - it very much depends on the design if the furniture.

maslinpan · 13/04/2023 12:40

I think it will probably look out of balance, sideboards tend to be designed to always be off the floor.

purplecorkheart · 13/04/2023 12:43

Depending on the design of the piece would the bottom shelf be able to support the entire weight of the piece without some of the weigh me diverted to the legs (sorry that makes way more sense in my head than I can word).

Thanks all. I’m not at home to take a photo at the moment but it’s this sideboard.

I think it would look odd with just the legs removed, however put a solid plinth on (a bit like a kitchen unit) and I think it would be OK. In fact you could probably leave the legs on and add the plinth over them.

I have a similar sideboard but it's sort of got a plinth at the bottom so is flush with the floor

BouncingWorms · 13/04/2023 13:00

It’ll look fine, but depending on how you use it the height might be irritating.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/04/2023 13:18

They probably unscrew so you could try it and see?

mogtheexcellent · 13/04/2023 13:40

you can get clear plastic thingys that you put under sofas etc to stop things rolling under, perhaps they would help?

CasperGutman · 14/04/2023 16:06

If the legs unscrew, you could try replacing them with little short ones so you can't see into the space underneath. I think it would look odd with no legs at all, though. Otherwise, I think changing it to a "plinth" type appearance as others have suggested could work really well.

I reckon it would look good if you buy skirting board of appropriate height, with a profile detail along the top that suits the style of the sideboard, and fit it around the front and sides with nicely mitred joints at the corners.

The biggest difficulty could be getting the paint to match really well, but in a worst case scenario you could just repaint the whole thing, I suppose.

redspottedmug · 14/04/2023 16:09

Get a robot vacuum cleaner, that'll keep it dust free.

Sprig1 · 14/04/2023 16:15

Another vote for adding a plinth/kick boards

ChocChipHandbag · 14/04/2023 16:19

It would probably look OK, but the top would then be at a weird height.

Can't you just screw then off and try it out?

SunshineAndFizz · 14/04/2023 16:22

Yeah just remove them

orangeflags · 14/04/2023 16:26

You need a roomba. You'll never have dust under there again

willieversleepagain1 · 14/04/2023 19:44

Thanks all. Yeah I could try it without the legs, and will get a friend to give a second opinion. It’s so heavy so I was putting it off. The robot vac is very tempting though!

A Eufy is the slimmest in my experience, and also the cheapest

willieversleepagain1 · 14/04/2023 20:07

Thank you for the recommendation, off to look at the price now so I can talk myself into it…

Mine is a Eufy. I love it because it fits under our enormous bed so I don't have to worry about moving the bed to vacuum. And the sofas.
