Dishwasher owners - do you still use a draining rack?

I've got a choice of a sink with a drainer in a slightly awkward position, or I could have a wider sink with no drainer.

First time I've had a dishwasher (can't wait to be honest) but I can't work out how necessary it is to have a sink with a drainer.

I've seen draining racks that can sit on the sink itself which I guess could be an option if I have a few bits to do, and a wider sink?

Yes, because there are some things that don't go in the dishwasher, and because sometimes it's necessary to wash something that you need to use again. I also put plastic things in there to dry after taking them out of the dishwasher as they're often still wet. I wouldn't be without space for a drying rack.

We have just had a new kitchen put in and have no drainer. If something needs to drain and not go in the dishwasher we lay it on a clean tea towel. We have a small kitchen and it gave us a lot more worktop space.

We use the drainer for large items like big pans that would take up too much room in the dishwasher, or things that can't go in the dishwasher like delicate cups, sharp knives, thermos flasks etc.

We don't have a built in drainer though, just a rack like this with its own base.

I don't have a draining rack, but I do have the place for it, that drains into the sink. And yes, I do rinse things and leave them to drain there.

Yes we have a draining rack for wooden stuff, Teflon pans, knives and delicate items that don't go into the dishwasher. We cook a lot and it would be a pain without one.

Perfect answer.

Get one of those metal drainers that go over the sink.

I have both and very rarely use the drainer.

BooksAndHooks · 13/04/2023 09:21

Yes, there are many items that don’t fit or aren’t suitable for the dishwasher. Some things come out of the dishwasher wet.

CatOnTheChair · 13/04/2023 09:24

Yes, because there is stuff that doesn't fit, isn't suitable for, or better not, put in the dishwasher.

Anjo2011 · 13/04/2023 09:26

No drainer just a silicone mat to lay things on and dry straight away.

AlltheFs · 13/04/2023 09:26

No, we have a Belfast sink and dishwasher. We only wash up a few things. Almost everything goes in the dishwasher.

Beachhutnut · 13/04/2023 09:28

Yes for handwashing certain things and to dry off any plastic items that never seem to dry properly in the dishwasher

ImustLearn2Cook · 13/04/2023 09:31

Yes, because some things still need to be hand washed as they cannot go in the dishwasher.

Don’t be tempted to wash something that says it can not be washed in the dishwasher. It will not end well for that item.

Also, some things don’t seem to dry well in the dishwasher. Not sure why. My dishwasher has a dry function that dries most things but some things are still quite wet and I put them in the dish rack beside the sink.

If you have enough bench space you could lay a folded towel down and place the dish rack on it. Then you can still get the bigger sink.

AnOldCynic · 13/04/2023 09:43

I have a sink, no drainer. Wouldn't ever get one again. They are just additional permenant clutter on the worktop.

I use the half bowl for draining things I hand wash. For a bigger amount of hand washing I use a fabric drain mat from Lakeland that gets put away when not in use.

Xrays · 13/04/2023 09:45

Nope. I just hand dry anything immediately that I have to hand wash but with a good dishwasher that really isn’t much!

Badbudgeter · 13/04/2023 09:52

Belfast sink and a dishwasher. My general rule is if it can’t survive the dishwasher it’s not really destined for my house. If a pot or something isn’t clean first time round it stays in the dishwasher. The only thing I really wash by hand are the kids water bottles. I just put a tea towel on the table ( countertops are wooden) and dry / refill ready go for next day.

NicLondon1 · 14/04/2023 00:01

Nope. Also love having a larger sink as you can soak large pans and trays in it.
Or use half for soaking and other half for washing/pouring a glass of water etc.

Instead if a drainer our worktop has some grooves that go down towards the sink - but I rarely use this really. Can just dry things on a tea towel on rare occasions.
