Replacement windows damage

We are just in the middle of having wooden windows replaced due to old age/rotten wood. When we got the quote, there were diagrams which showed each window, dimensions and price.

We've never done anything like this before so when chatting to the gent I asked about the finish around the new upvc windows. He said that they would be made neat but didn't quote separately for this work. When the windows have been removed, literally all the plaster has fallen off and revealed a horrendous previous job, including bricks missing and carrier bags and newspaper being shoved in the gaps, before a crazy amount of wooden trim was installed (to cover this I'm guessing)

This is now too much damage for him to 'make neat' and definitely isn't his fault, but I'm really disheartened that this is how things might be left.

Is it normal to have to then have to get a builder to finish the work. Time and money we weren't expecting. Is it OK for the window fitter to leave the work like this?

Do the windows actually fit or is it the angle? It looks like the frames aren’t flush with the walls.
We’ve had windows done in two houses and there was a little bit of plastering needed around the edge if a couple of windows but nothing like that!
Is there another local fitter you could contact to come round and give an opinion?

Sorry, I see they may be recessed. But still, that’s a lot to knock off getting windows in & out.

Yes, they are set back. They had wooden surrounds and when these were taken out with the window, the plaster just fell off in huge chunks. I'll try and attach a photo of the other bay which is getting done tomorrow. The red cross is on the piece of wood that's created the issues and what seems to be holding all the plaster in place.

There was a wooden frame that acted like a picture frame round each one that he removed today. I'm concerned the plaster will all break away when the sides are removed like before.

Ahh, I see.
No, window fitters wouldn’t normally leave it like that but then I don’t suppose they would come across that issue all that often. Most windows don’t have that much around them. it looks like there were pretty big nails banged through the wood into the plaster too.
I really feel for you, you were expecting new windows and for it to look nice & now you’ve got that to deal will. 😕

Window fitters come across this sort of thing all the time and usually carry vast quantities of expanding foam and selections of different sizes of uPVC trim to cover it all up. He should either fix it himself or contract a plasterer to finish it off if he can't.
Have you paid up front?

RubyLS · 12/04/2023 23:50

We've only paid a deposit. Last day tomorrow and I don't want to pay the rest until im sure about this work. I presumed we would be getting a upvc trim up the sides of the windows to edge it as the windows are set back, like the wood I put the red cross on. To me, it looks like part of the window set up and we asked for wood to be replaced with white so a bit annoyed it's just been abandoned. I've been at work while they've been here but I'll be around tomorrow. Wanted to know what I should be expecting before I question them about it.

I get how you feel but looking at that I also feel sorry for the window replacement guy who is probably regretting taking the job on !

Best wishes on getting it sorted. Hopefully you'll find some middle ground.
