I feel so underwhelmed by it all.

It's been a really difficult process (for some reason much harder than the last time). I downsized because I just couldn't cope with my old house. It was really big and the problems were neverending and really expensive to fix. I've moved somewhere smaller but already there's a leak in the conservatory ceiling (which was a level 2 on the survey), and I just feel overwhelmed at the work ahead of me. I can also hear a ton of traffic noise out my window which I didn't notice at either viewing. I feel so miserable.

Give it time !
Moving is exhausting, don’t try to do too much too fast.

Georgiepud · 11/04/2023 21:53

The conservatory leak can probably be dealt with fairly easily. The traffic noise may need further thought as to whether you install double glazing or have your quieter rooms at the back.
You need to take your time, within reason, to see what to tackle first to get the best result.

The first few days in a new home can be gruelling.

I hated our house for about the first 6 weeks and just wanted to move out again. As a PP said, moving is ridiculously stressful, and once the adrenaline stops pumping you can end up feeling very flat.

Give it a few weeks, try and personalise the space as best you can and realise that 99% of people feel this way when they first move.

Good luck!

Is it distant traffic noise?
I have a busy A road that I can hear in the distance. I find it’s much worse in the winter when there aren’t leaves on the trees. Also I notice it more when the wind is in a certain direction.

eurochick · 11/04/2023 22:21

If it's wet near you that will increase the road noise.

martinisforeveryone · 11/04/2023 22:21

The main thing you’re probably feeling is absolutely shattered. You need a few nights of good rest and you need to adjust.

It’s been a long winter. You’ll feel more enthusiastic after a bit of decent weather.

Highly recommend getting a blackout blind, plus interlined curtains for light, noise and heat insulation. That’ll help with night time traffic sounds.

Housingdestressnotdistress · 11/04/2023 22:25

Do you think the noise is related to your move? When i first moved I became hyper sensitive to neighbour noise and traffic noise. My old housemate came to visit and she said the house I left was much noisie and I never noticed it there.

My house purchase was horrible and I hated the house when I first moved. I think the stress of the process made me expect the house to be better so any negative about it was made much worse. as I’ve settled into the new place it’s gotten better

CrumpetsandJammmm · 11/04/2023 22:30

It’s the come down. It’s so stressful and exciting beforehand but the reality is always a bit of a let down.

Focus on getting one room really nice and sorted so it feels more homely, and give it times. It’s completely normal. Our new house, it took me 3 months to stop feeling like I was in a holiday let!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 11/04/2023 23:54

Wind direction can also magnify noise.

What a pain about the roof but at least it's isolated and can be repaired without vast expense.

First few days are always v unsettling in my experience. You find all the small crappy stuff you missed on pre sales visits and you are so tired everything feels massive.

Get one room sorted and cozy so you can retreat there this week. Forecast is blah so batten down the hatches and curl up and plan.

Give it time. Moving can be so stressful and we want everything to be perfect but there are often niggles when you move into a new property. Try and get at least one room straight where you can relax and retreat to when you feel overwhelmed. Takes time to feel settled but hopefully you will in time

BounceyB · 11/04/2023 23:57

This could be it. I've been so stressed the past couple of months and I've had no help at all from anyone except a bit from my ex-h. I just keep on thinking it will be at least a year until it's the house I really want to be in.

Thank you for the positive messages. Feeling a little better.

You absolutely will get used to road noise. I hated the road noise when I moved to our current home, 9 years later and I can barely hear it.

WalnutWhippy · 12/04/2023 09:27

Triple glazing would eliminate noise outside completely so that's an option if it doesn't settle down.

A34 · 12/04/2023 10:02

Moving house is SO stressful. We were lucky enough to find a house that ticked most of our boxes and 4 months down the line we are happy with it. Those first few days were still awful. It was confusing and disconcerting. Never, ever again.

EssexMamisoa · 12/04/2023 18:36

Oh god moving house is so stressful. We also moved to a louder road and I spent the first few days unhappy. However now I barely hear it. We did invest in new double glazing. If it’s that bad secondary glazing is great and quite cheap.

Agree with pp re getting one room cosy - we did our bedroom so we had somewhere to retreat to at night. Our house looked ridiculous for ages though with one immaculate modern room and the rest of the rooms dowdy 🤣
