Stairs- wood, carpet, other?

We have just renovated a derelict property. Downstairs are tiles, bedrooms and upstairs hall is wooden flooring. We do have some rugs- but no carpet in any room. No children, but a dog.

Would it be odd to put a carpet runner on the stairs (just down the centre, not fully carpeted stairs). Would you leave the stairs are just wood? Any other ideas?

I personally prefer carpeted stairs - we have oak flooring through the ground floor lounge and hallway areas but carpets on the stairs. From a comfort and noise reduction point of view. I do think some properties that have wooden stairs with a stair runner can look fabulous too

Adding that we live in a mid terraced and literally the only time we hear our neighbours is occasionally we can hear them going upstairs - not sure if they have carpet or not though

I like a carpet runner, I wanted one in my old house but the stairs were too wonky and the gaps either side would not have been even. Plain wood stairs can be very noisy so I’d either put a runner or carpet.

Carpet runners look great!

I like a carpet on the stairs, a runner would be lovely if the upstairs is wooden flooring or confine the carpet to the hallway upstairs.

We have carpet runner, looks great and much safer for the dog.

I don't like uncarpeted stairs. Too slippery.

When we took up the old carpet- the original, 1930's stairs did indeed just have a runner down the centre. My worry was whether it would be odd to go from tiles downstairs, to wooden flooring upstairs- with just a strip of carpet on the stairs? Seems it not uncommon due to reducing noise and helping stop slips. thanks everyone.

We removed a quote fancy carpet runner in our rental because it was very thick, red, and our cat hair was impossible to get out of it.

Now every time the OH comes down the stairs he sounds like a galloping horse. They also show every spec of dust, hairs etc and generally look a bit grotty.

I liked the way it looked with the runner, but really, it needed a lower pile and to be closer in colour to our cats.

Ours had fancy pants rods at the back of each step which made it look quite elegant and also reduces the possibility of it moving and becoming dangerous.
