HELP!!! Covering dark paint

I am trying to repaint a room from dark blue to white so that I can repaint to a different light colour. Two coats in, still very blue! What to do now? I'm panicking! I ran out of paint so will need to get some more. I think I may head to the shop buying a white primer instead of the current normal paint because I heard it works better ??

Are you using a roller? A friend tried to do this with a brush and she had the same experience as you. A well loaded roller is the way to go.

You don’t need expensive paint to cover up the dark colour but probably best steer clear of mega cheap. I covered a dark blue with magnolia (was a rental and they specified that) and after 3 coats it was good, 2 coats was almost but not quite.

An undercoat is usually cheaper than top coat, so you might like to use that initially. If you go for a light colour, it doesn't need to be all white. I'd expect 2 coats of undercoat and 2 coats of top coat applied with a roller for a good finish with good paint - if in doubt, ask for 'trade' paint, they usually have a higher amount of colour particles in them, and usually come in big 2.5l or even 5l tubs.

Are you letting it fully dry before you are applying more paint? Often it gets more opaque once dry, and if you paint over too quickly you'll only roll off your wet paint.

I had this problem and bought some white undercoat. Two coats of it really worked well but it was expensive paint.

Are you trying to paint matt onto silk ?

Hello, just to update. I finally managed to turn the thing white after 3 coats! The last one is a BIN primer, expensive but looks nice, easy to apply and it covers all the imperfections resulting from my shoddy work (first time painting).

@Lonelycrab yeah that's true! The bit that leaks out blue the most arethe corners which I painted with a brush. I finally bought some mini rollers to paint the corners and got it evenly white that way!

@NellyBarney Undercoat! Why didn't I think about it before 😫
