Anyone had roof lining replaced?

The permeable lining in our roof is the original from when the house was built in the 50’s. It’s starting to perish and split, leaving some drafty gaps! Has anyone had theirs replaced in recent years? I’m wondering how big a job it is, I gather they have to take all the tiles off to replace it so wondering what cost level we’re looking at? We want to insulate and fully board up there in the not too distant future (currently partially boarded) but it seems pointless doing that with damaged lining.

Place marking as I'm in a similar position

I've seen lots of loft room companies where they offer roof lining. Pretty sure they don't remove the tiles and just fix it internally.

Oh really? That would be much easier! I thought it had to be done from the outside so need scaffolding which is a big chunk of costs alone.

If you Google search luxury loft rooms, you'll see what I mean! The luxury ones are plasterboarded, some of the companies offer various packages, starting with just boarding, or lined with a membrane too.

I warn you, you'll end up down a rabbit hole and get carried away 😂

The roof ‘lining’ is usually ‘felt’, some sort of bitumen based membrane, more recently a type of breathable membrane. It’s there as a second Defence just in case the tiles let in some water, think high horizontal driving rain once in a blue moon. It doesn’t do anything more. It can only be replaced by stripping the roof, though tears can be repaired internally.
Draughts should be welcome in the loft, and I don’t see why you wouldn’t board it out anyway.
You can obviously put some lining up under the rafters to stop dust etc, which has no impact on the integrity of the roof, as long as the rafters remain ventilated.
