Extremely cold room

Our bedroom gets really cold and not sure what to do about it that won't cost a lot of money.

It's a relatively new extension to the house (upstairs and downstairs, probably between 10 and 20 years old).

The room is carpeted but as soon as the heater comes off it just becomes unbearable that I can't even go into it. Other rooms are fine, except the living room which is just as cold as the bedroom, if not worse. They are on top of each other.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Is there insulation in the roof and walls of the extension?

How many external walls? Is there a roof above that can be insulated? Any gaps around the windows that can be filled in?

Nowtsure · 09/04/2023 04:39

Not sure about the insulation as we've only moved in recently @JetBlackSteed but worth look into.

Perhaps we could change the bedroon windows @roses2.

How would you insulate the living room? There's just 1 external wall, a double door leading outside and 2 full windows so I don't think that helps either.

Also, any idea about cost, or which trades person we should be looking for?

We have this problem too. Extension was built in 2009 attached to a Georgian house. The coldest room is our bedroom, followed by the living room underneath it. There is another bedroom and a utility room in the extension which are also really cold. That second bedroom is also unbearably hot in summer.

When we moved in we discovered there was no loft insulation in the second bedroom and also none in the en-suite which was causing the ceiling to go mouldy. It was poor above our bedroom too. We've redone it all and can honestly say there's been sod all difference to the temperature of the rooms.

When we looked again at the sale brochure photos we'd missed the fact there were 2 heaters in the room (which weren't there when we viewed the house) 🙄.

We upgraded the radiator in the second bedroom and will be doing the one in our bedroom in the next few weeks as it's way too small for the room.

Are there trees or buildings shading it. Removing those if allowed and letting the sun reach it would help.
Our coldest bedroom - just leaving the door wide open so warmth can spread from the rest of the house. Not very economical.
if the floor is concrete perhaps thicker underlay or some other flooring.
Does the sun come in any windows?
Put thickest insulation in loft.

I'd ask a surveyor to advise you.

It sounds like you need insulation.

Is it a flat roof extension? They are buggers to keep warm.

I had the same issue, recently solved.

I insulated the loft over the bedroom (20cm of insulation) and between the eaves. I replaced the windows with modern gas-filled double glazing

The room faces south but was still cooler than the rest of the house. I couldn't understand it. Then, on a very cold night, I found a patch of the bedroom wall that was wet with condensation. Not rising damp obviously, since first floor.

I checked the wall outside and discovered a hole in the mortar about 2cm wide (mortar bees?). It was letting cold air into the wall cavity. I replaced the mortar, and the room warmed up. It took a few days but the difference is immediately noticeable and the condensation on the inner wall has gone.
