Light grey fence paint

Hi all,

I have loads of fence panels in different colours I'd like to paint light grey. I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a good brand which won't require lots of coats (I literally have about 10 panels to paint 🤣).

Also would you recommend spraying over painting? Is the coverage still good with spray?

Many thanks 😊

You'll use twice as much paint if you spray

Cherryblossom200 · 06/04/2023 13:27

Ok thanks 😊

I have used Cuprinol Garden Shades, range of colours, really easy to apply (I used a brush) just note, they state the following. I missed that bit and it's a bit flakey!

'MINIMUM OF 2 COATS REQUIRED. SUBSEQUENT COATS MUST BE APPLIED ON THE SAME DAY NO LONGER THAN 8 HOURS APART. IF NOT POSSIBLE, LIGHTLY SAND DOWN SURFACES BEFORE RECOAT TO ENSURE ADHESION.

Thanks!

Having to apply two coats in one day is waaay too much! I'd be there all night 😂 I'll have to try and find an alternative!

I really don't want to have to do two coats if I can help it.

I would paint the fence black, it really makes the plants stand out. And it won’t need so many coats……

TattiePants · 06/04/2023 19:36

This is Cuprinol Garden Shades in Silver Birch. We have a lot of fence so it took us weeks (probably months) to give the whole lot 2 coats. We definitely didn’t do two coats in one day and it hasn’t affected ours at all. We’ve also touched a few panels up years later.

We have Farrow and Ball exterior wood flat eggshell on our fences and wooden garage. Garage painted 12 years ago and it’s still perfect. We used Off Black.

FiledAwayInABox · 07/04/2023 00:19

First things first, do you own all the fences? If not have you checked with the owners if you can paint them?

I'd use a roller that is especially for fences. It makes it quicker. Spraying is messy.

Are you sure you want to paint rather than stain? Paint doesn't soak in like stain and May end up looking scruffy more quickly. Stain won't provide such a uniform appearance but your mismatched panels will all look similar and will blend in together. You could always do a test?

Netaporter · 07/04/2023 04:36

i’d be cautious of the paint bleeding through to next door’s side before you start. For that reason definitely don’t spray and although it is much quicker, the wind can take the paint anywhere…

Light grey - blah
Black - too harsh

Go very dark grey, which will pick up different shades as the light varies during the day. It also makes a perfect contrast with plants.

TizerorFizz · 07/04/2023 09:01

@FiledAwayInABox
The paint we have used has maintained colour far better than stain. We had one of those products on the garage first and it looked Swahili after a few years. The external wood paint is far more stable. Costs more though.

gluenotsoup · 07/04/2023 21:25

Can anyone recommend a dark colour? I’ve been looking at the Cuprinol ducks back range, but not sure what colour to get. Silver copse? Or is it quite light when it’s on? South facing garden, gazillions of panels…

Grey is so very dated
it will devalue
avoid if you can

Devalue what? The colour of a fence won't devalue a house when it can be changed so easily!

TattiePants · 07/04/2023 21:43

@gluenotsoup I got the colour of my fence mixed up. The picture I posted previously is Silver Copse which is a mid grey, not particularly light. It makes a lovely contrast with plants.

Very hard to change a fence colour

grey says dated

TattiePants · 07/04/2023 21:50

@gluenotsoup this is better representation of the colour.

🙄as if a perfectly ordinary neutral coloured fence would devalue a property. It may not be your taste but don’t be ridiculous.

I'm not a fan of grey either but to say it will devalue a house is ridiculous

gluenotsoup · 07/04/2023 22:18

If greys not for you, but the fence needs something- what would you choose?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 07/04/2023 22:20

Not that you asked, but I'd either do charcoal black or a smokey sage green. tones.

Light grey is going to look dreary year-round. It's not a good background for plants in the summer and provides no interest in winter.

TizerorFizz · 08/04/2023 09:14

F&B has a great range of dark greys and blue/blacks.
