Change windows/front door on this house or not?

It's a 50's ex-council semi in a set of similar houses- very nice and well maintained. The white upvc windows and front door are in good condition, but just feel very blah.

Would you keep as is or is there a more interesting/stylish alternative!

It depends on what you want to change them to. They look fine to me!

minipie · 31/03/2023 17:05

I think if all the neighbours are the same I’d probably keep as is. Unless you’re going to do a full on “facelift” with rendering/cladding and other changes.

ChateauMargaux · 31/03/2023 17:06

It looks nice and as you say, well maintained. I wouldn't change the windows and door unless they needed it because the were drafty / failed double glazing or otherwise.

BlueMongoose · 31/03/2023 17:06

Looks fine to me. 'Colours', though they can look OK when new, will go out of fashion before very long, and and the foil ones fade in the light anyway.

Waydown · 31/03/2023 17:09

I might change the door but not the windows. Fancy windows on an "ordinary" house look daft to my eyes.

BlueRaspberry7 · 31/03/2023 17:15

@Waydown yes I reckon I agree!

I love the functional elegance of those houses and hate it when they are ‘made over’ in ways that don’t suit the architecture and era they were built in.

If you had loads of cash to splash you could get a wooden door more like the original.

Calling · 31/03/2023 20:26

I an ideal world if I lived there I would put put in wooden windows and doors of the correct design. But one of the problems with uPVC is that it goes onto landfill and never biodegrades, whereas timber does. In that case, the doors and windows could be used in another house but the dimensions would have to the same, eg a house in the same area.

I would definitely not replace with stuck on leaded lights for example. Keep to the period and the design.

Calling · 31/03/2023 20:28

Personally prefer to see more of the front garden kept, it does not all have to be paved over for car.

Reddickyouless · 31/03/2023 20:33

What a pointless reply @calling , that's not what @BlueRaspberry7 was asking
I just change the front door too, the rest looks good

MathsNervous · 31/03/2023 21:21

Keep as is. Looks like a lovely property.

bellac11 · 31/03/2023 21:25

Personally I like to see windows with the same visuals/shapes as when they were built

I cant imagine they were built like that.

Im quite fussy about windows

Marblessolveeverything · 31/03/2023 21:27

They look well, if you wanted to change them I have seen some people have them painted. I would agree with PP, see if they are retaining the heat etc and then make a decision.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/03/2023 21:46

I'd leave it. Colours will date. And black frames look very dark and forbidding.

Adeleskirts · 31/03/2023 21:54

Honestly I think it is what it is. There isn’t much point changing the windows, maybe change the front door but if he tempted to accept that’s what it looks like.

Furries · 01/04/2023 02:10

They look absolutely fine and in keeping with the neighbouring property.

I would focus any funds on updating/decorating your inside space, if needed. After all, that’s where you spend your time and it’s what you look at most. Focus your efforts on where you all spend your time. Revisit “kerb appeal” if and when you are thinking about moving. And even then, it’s not always necessary - in your case, the outside generally looks ok (ie not worth the expense of replacing vs the return it could give you on property value).

Furries · 01/04/2023 02:14

If you have space out back (assuming there is space as looks like a gate to the rear), then moving the bins and recycling boxes would make a difference. Replace with some decent pots/planters for flowering shrubs/summer bedding plants/bulbs etc would give a much more cost-effective lift to the viewpoint.

Ireallydohope · 01/04/2023 05:01

Just leave them they're fine and match everyone else's and do the job of being windows

C4tastrophe · 01/04/2023 07:31

I’ve seen far worse windows than those. The ones with only openers or sashes at the top, because they are cheaper.
They look fine. Door is a bit naff though.

BlueRaspberry7 · 01/04/2023 11:21

Any smart, durable front door types and/or supplier recommendations?

@Reddickyouless mine was a valid response as anyone else's was. Have you got a particular axe to grind?

BlueRaspberry7 · 01/04/2023 18:27

@Calling

I think they meant as I was asking specially about windows and front door, but other suggestions/thoughts are also fine with me.

AddictedToPaintTesters · 02/04/2023 00:04

A wooden door would be nice, or it's possible to paint the pvc one to see if that's enough of a change.

JaffacakeJanine · 02/04/2023 01:35

As others said, maybe change out front door and frame to something a bit more aesthetically pleasing (could even think about extending the side window to the ground to let in more light?)

But generally it's all pretty inoffensive.

Cheaper option than replace might be getting them spray painted by a company that specializes in up spray painting. Thinking of doing this for my kitchen door which is similar to your front door!

Nat6999 · 02/04/2023 01:38

Keep the windows, have them sprayed if you don't like the colour & get a composite door.
