Cavity wall insulation

My house currently has little or no insulation. This winter we've been cold. How do you go about getting cavity wall insulation and what does it cost?

Read up on it first as you cannot trust their salespersons.
The one to get is the balls, and cost depends on how big your house is and how awkward it is.

First question, do you have cavity walls?

Definitely have cavity walls. House was built in 1970 and it's a large dormer bungalow. I am very nervous about the sales people. The rest of the work we have had done has been through recommended tradesmen but I can't seem to find one for this.

You do lose some heat through the walls, but ceilings and roofs are where you get most bang per buck.
I think it’s only specialists that do wall insulation.

More heat is lost through walls than the roof ( Google it ) most people will say do roof insulation simply because it’s the easiest to do ( and cheapest ) ,you do lose a good amount of heat through an uninsulated roof , but walls are the key to a warm house. It’s just not as easy ( or cheap ) to do.

we have a 70’s house and the cavity is filled with a foam like material, it’s a 65mm cavity. It was in when we moved here so not sure how much difference it makes …. But it’s got to be better than having cold air blowing though the cavity ? No problems as yet.

Most use the tiny polystyrene beads now to cavity fill , a friend had his done about 7-8 years ago ( 30’s house) with no problems to date.

It’s well worth looking into.

I just paid close to 2k for the little balls in a terrace. I had some old stuff removed too which cost a bit so could be the same kind of price. There’s no government assistance for insulation crazily unless you’re a v low earner…

How much better are the balls than the fibre stuff? We apparently have the latter, and may be able to get a grant towards insulation, but assuming the (part) cost and upheaval to get one replaced with the other may not be worth it.

I would have thought the difference in efficiency between poly balls and foam would be minimal and probably not worth the cost of replacement. Any insulation is better than none. Triple glazed windows are more efficient than double glazed but we're not all running around replacing them are we.

Somewhat off topic but might be helpful, friends of mine installed thermal lining paper in a room they have that overhangs their garden (it's got a wooden frame). It's like wallpaper but really thick and harder to install, so they got a painter and decorator to do it.

The stuff they bought (it goes from cheap to v expensive) was about £50 a roll, and they claim it's increased the warmth of that room by about two thirds.

Product is wall rock thermal liner by Anaglypta. The bucket of paste is about £20 and will put up two rolls.
