Abandoned car next to our parking space

We have 2 parking spaces next to our back gate - effectively a drive. In the space next to ours, a 2016 Golf has been sitting for 2 years. The windscreen is cracked, it's covered in moss, it has 4 flat tyres and things are starting to leak out of it and run down across our spaces. It's untaxed.

The house the space belongs to is empty but it was rented. They're down the road and round the corner so I don't know anything about the landlord.

Does anyone know if I can report this in some way even if it is technically on a private parking space? I've hosed the oil off and cleared the spreading moss a couple of times but he or she obviously has no intention of moving it after literally years of neglect.

This might be helpful (although not if you live in Scotland, which has a different process)

It sounds like you can report abandoned cars to the council and they have a duty to remove (after a procedure to try to trace the owner), even if it is on private land.

I think you need to be realistic. It's parked in a private space. What do you think anyone is going to do about it? It's the same as if it was parked on someone's drive.

You could always drag it out into the street and block the road. Council will remove it that day. There are ways of moving a car.

Thank you!

@SophiaSW1 I'm aware it's on private land. I said so in my post. The oil is leaking onto our "drive" so I was just wondering if I can resolve this by reporting it as it isn't taxed or SORNed.

If the owner has failed to SORN then they face a fine, but as its on private land I don't think there is anything you can really do.

I wouldn't do anything dodgy like drag it into the road to get towed as pp said - who knows the circumstances; it could belong to some nutter who is doing some time in prison.

Try reporting it and see what happens - you've nothing to lose.

MumOf2workOptions · 22/03/2023 20:33

We had this where we used to live and had allocated car parking spaces. We reported it to the police and they towed it away! That was about 15 years ago tho!

I wouldn't touch it - it's a long way off the road anyway. It'd mean dragging it about 100 yards as the main road is at the front of the terrace!

If the house wasn't empty I'd knock and tell them about the oil.

@DashboardConfessional so the oil is an environmental hazard, which adds to your reasons for wanting it removed.

carriedout · 22/03/2023 21:43

You can find out who owns the house via land registry and approach them.

The oil is an environmental health issue, albeit small in the scheme of things.

Copperoliverbear · 22/03/2023 21:59

Report to the council it's a hazard x
