Anyone else just starting extension?

Finally started our extension last week amd we dered of anyone in the same boat.

Footings are nearly dug out, small extension and conservatory knocked down. It's chaos.

Also the waste pipe from toilet looks like it will run through the extension if we don't move it so looks like we will have to cut off bathroom until we can afford to do that. Argh.

How are others getting on?

Hi, we're the same, ground broken last week for a single storey extension. Builder discovered a gas and water pipe right where he needs to dig that shouldn't be there so everythings on hold until its sorted.

After the rain we've had over the last few days the holes slowly filling up with water so if I don't get my new kitchen by summer I might have a nice swimming pool 😅

Oh no! I hope they sort thar quickly for you. Always unseen issues arise eh. I keep thinking it will be worth the pain.

Good luck keep me posted on process!

Mine starts Monday, and I am dreading it. Due to finish the last week of July and I know it will be worth it in the end, but its going to be so disruptive, and as I wfh I'm going to be the one bearing the brunt of it.

ManicMonday007 · 31/03/2023 22:01

I was dreading it too but to be honest it's been manageable so far. We are 3 weeks into a 12 week build. Good luck hope yours isn't too disruptive xx

We are 3 months over deadline and £30k over budget on a 2 story extension. Started in June, was supposed to finish ground floor part by Oct and first floor by Xmas, but the ground floor took till early Jan. Endless problems with mistakes on the drawings, structural engineer over-speccing to the point the steelworks refused to make the beams, old house revealing rotting beams, collapsing drains and single skin walls adding weeks and £££. No heating all through the freezing weather last November, raining inside because of delays closing the roof meaning replastering needed, extra costs for furniture storage and all of us trying to live and work in the lounge and cooking on a camping stove for months. I WFH too.

Hopefully finishing in the next couple of weeks but it's been absolutely miserable.

Good luck to you all!

Oh no that sounds horrendous, you poor thing. How can you even find 30k extra, I would be screwed.

Hope it's all finished for you very soon and then you can enjoy it and forget the pain!

We have just started, too - on the 27th. The back of our ground floor has pretty much gone, although our boiler is and radiator is still standing - that caused a power cut when the rain came down but now the boiler is totally wrapped up.

The builders have set up a temporary kitchen in our front room and will plumb in the sink and washing machine this week.
Our lovely neighbours have given us their keys while they are away and so we have use of the their house (and intact plumbing and electrics) whilst ours is set up.

CMOTDibbler · 04/04/2023 12:22

That wasn't a great start :-( turns out the surveyor didn't think about the weird drains and as we will be extending over them we need a camera survey and permission from the sewage company first. FML

ManicMonday007 · 04/04/2023 21:32

Oh no, that's nit what you need. Any idea how long that will take?

We had 2 storey extension started early 2020, the whole back of house was knocked out, dust everywhere, builders did their best to partition off to stop dust. AT one point in the summer, we didnt have a kitchen - we had kettle and toaster upstairs, temporary kitchen sink in what was the old bathroom - we also had no bathroom for a while , so I set up a hosepipe and sprinkler on the scaffolding behind our garage where we could shower naked in the garden. 😉
