i do like it as a wall colour but it’s everywhere. What else is a good neutral? Is Magnolia coming back?!

I never thought it was considered to be a good thing to have grey as a basis for the whole house though. It was definitely a thing for some but imo it was considered unfashionable & the wrong way to do grey.

OhMerde · 21/03/2023 14:12

Slaked lime by Little Greene. Light, mid and deep are all fab.

rioseco · 21/03/2023 15:18

Grey looks terrible in period houses- ok in modern spaces.

TizerorFizz · 21/03/2023 17:09

@soffa
I simply don’t look at influencers. Grey everywhere is frankly horrible. It shows no imagination of flair. It follows a trend but often shows no personality of the owner. The best houses are often photographed for magazines and I haven’t seen grey for years in, eg, Homes and Gardens. I’ve seen colour, amazing fabrics, textures and lovely accessories that say something about the owner.

I have used Elephants Breath with pale blue and coral, with chartreuse and a deeper taupe, and with pink and off white . It all works! But grey everything is well past it’s sell by date.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 21/03/2023 17:47

I think grey is lovely when used properly, mixed with other tones and colours, I think it’s the Mrs Hinch look, grey walls, grey carpet, grey velvet sofa, mirrored furniture that looks dated now, it was complete overkill and the same is happening with the beige trend, even the same accessories are doing
the rounds, fake olive trees and eucalyptus branches are everywhere, it’s very much the look of the moment, I’m bored of seeing it already.

minipie · 21/03/2023 17:59

There are so many different greys.

I’m not a fan of the cold greys which don’t have another colour in, like silver, steel grey, anthracite. The Hinch look. However I still like the greys which have a bit of colour and warmth - French Grey as an example.

Some of the colours mentioned here eg Elephants Breath would have been sold as a grey when grey was in and are now being rebranded as “neutral”. They can be seen as either really.

Agree that the current look of white with wood, lots of plants, rattan, pink/terracotta/green accents will be replaced by something else (shame really as I like it more than the previous few looks!)

There are thousands of neutrals these days so I doubt magnolia will ever make a comeback! It used to be the only alternative to white, that's the only reason it was popular for so long.

Maagnolia will definitely come back. Interiors just like fashion moves in cycles. And move in 20 year or so cycles.

Cool colours are disappearing. Warmer colours are reappearing. There’s always been loads of neutrals. Magnolia was just easy.

It will be back.

Magnolia: is the UK’s most-hated paint colour making a comeback?

Ubiquitous in the 80s and 90s, magnolia fell from favour. Is it making a comeback?

DappledThings · 21/03/2023 18:11

Keep away from neutrals and get some proper colour up!

I doubt many will go for true magnolia. There are far too many nicer variations of it now.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/03/2023 18:26

Not yet…… but it will return at some point. I used to lecture on trends. Everything, even the most hateful thing returns at some point.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 21/03/2023 18:50

They don’t normally return in it’s original form though, patterned floors and carpets had a revival but it wasn’t the orange and black swirly monstrosities of the 70’s, I agree with @CellophaneFlower there are so many varieties of neutral now it’s unlikely a person with an eye for interior design would pick a bulk buy builders grade magnolia, though my husband is convinced every shade of neutral is magnolia with a fancy name!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/03/2023 19:17

No, they don’t normally return in its original form, but it will return in some format. Probably a rename!

OnaBegonia · 21/03/2023 19:35

B&Q have a neutral called Santa Fe, we've painted over grey with it, very nice and calming.

There is so much choice…it hurts my head 😂

Totally with you!

TizerorFizz · 21/03/2023 21:01

@OnaBegonia That is a great colour. I don’t think that will date.

soffa · 22/03/2023 00:51

@TizerorFizz I'm not sure why you replied to me & what point you were trying to make?

TizerorFizz · 22/03/2023 08:30

@soffa
Just added to the conversation re influencers and why colours become popular. Where people get ideas from
is interesting. I won’t tag you again.

soffa · 22/03/2023 08:53

It's fine, I was just confused.

I do think the influencer influence & your home, meal etc should conform to a pretty vignette odd!

KnickerlessParsons · 21/03/2023 12:49

We're working through the whole house slowly, and painting everything white. I love it. It's fresh and clean looking, goes with any furniture/curtains/artwork/ornaments etc, and shows them off nicely. Wish we'd done it years ago.

I have just stayed in a holiday cottage which was decorated entirely in grey. Kitchen, bedding, flooring, they even had paintings of grey beach pebbles and carefully arranged grey pebbles as ornaments. So depressing!

Oops, sorry wrong quote!

Notanothernewname · 22/03/2023 20:47

My bathroom and kitchen are a pale grey(Hempstead from B&Q) my study is pure white as I had white paint left over, the rest of the flat needs decorating still. I use artwork, cushions, the odd throw for colour but I can't decide what to paint it and I'm rubbish at painting so all white is a safe bet!

SoShallINever · 22/03/2023 20:54

Our entire house is white/sage/pink cushions and sofas with wooden shutters and floors, and lots of plants.
I've never liked grey.

IhateJan22 · 22/03/2023 21:02

I prefer neutral colours, almond white with a pop of colour from the Navy sofa.

TizerorFizz · 23/03/2023 00:31

Is navy colour?
