What can we do with this bathroom?
Holibobs11 · 18/03/2023 13:35
Moved to first owned house at worse time so v little money left for doing anything. We were going to leave the bathroom as other priorities but as we had to get the boiler replaced, the bath panel and some tiles had to be removed and now there’s a problem with the shower.
So do we just get the shower fixed and a new panal installed, or do we try and do more without spending too much £?
Ideas for updating it on very little budget most welcome!!! Perhaps replace panel and a few missing tiles (low level) , fix shower, paint the tiles and replace flooring?
the vanity unit is hideous but I fear it’s too expensive to replace it??? All we want is a standard white suite and white tiles!!!
But even replacing the suite could cost £3000 from what I have researched!! (Expensive for us)
thanks

Paint the vanity white with new handles, new flooring and fix the bits that need fixing. The rest can wait.

Where are the missing tiles?
I wouldn't waste money on non-essential or cosmetic repairs, just do what's essential to tide it over until it's refurbed.

Do you just mean the missing tiles on the floor? You could just lift the rest and replace with a decent lino and underlay. Or use a bit of self leveller if they won't come up.
Shower either fixed or replaced with one the same size so it doesn't interfere with existing tiling. You can keep the same shower if redoing bathroom in same layout at a later date. Check previous owners haven't left spare tiles in loft or shed.
The tiling looks pretty decent. Is it just the overly yellow/cream look you don't like? Get a specialist paint for the doors and change them to white or another colour. I wouldn't paint those tiles

Tile paint looks like shit - don't use it.

Cover the gap below the tiles with a sheet of plywood, seal and paint white. Spruce up the rest to make it useable, but don't spend too much.

Sorry see your missing tiles pic now. Whatever colour you get for the bath panel, you could get the same in a plastic or acrylic sheet so it extends round that wall.
There are loads of companies on line that will provide something cut to size

Thank you. I have heard some negative things about tile paint. It’s the beige/cream that bothers me. If we left the tiles and just painted the vanity unit doors it may brighten it up a bit. In that case what colour/design vinyl flooring would go? The flooring I like would probably look awful with the tiles!!
SinisterKnitter · 18/03/2023 14:19
Seriously, don't waste money on replacing anything that's serviceable! It's a waste of money that could go in your refurb pot. It really doesn't matter if it looks a bit crappy for a bit.
Holibobs11 · 18/03/2023 15:22
To be honest I’m not sure if we’ll ever afford it! Or maybe years or when something crucial breaks!!!

Don't lose the bath panel whatever you do because you won't be able to find a replacement that will fit unless it's one that's still available. You can make a new one with flexible MDF.
If it was me I would paint the vanity unit and a plywood panel where the tiles have come off, white. Look into the stick on film for the worktop. Get some turquoise shimmery paint or nail varnish and just paint the darker bits on the border tiles then get a small offcut of the blue/green/beige (try and match the beige to the wall tiles) tile effect vinyl or some stick on tiles to brighten the floor up.
Alternatively paint the vanity, MDF bath panel and the border tiles deep blue and again light vinyl on the floor to brighten it up. £100 max.

Wow thank you! Great ideas. Unfortunately the bath panel broke when the plumber took it off

Agree do the minimum possible at the moment. Bathpanel and tiles replaced then paint job and get some pretty storage containers to hold the stuff on the windowsill.
And incidentally this is the issue with fully tiled bathrooms, they get very dated. Much easier to updated if you paint the walls a fashionable colour.

I think if you replace the missing tiles, lay some flooring and maybe paint the vanity it would look much better. As long as it's serviceable you can do a refit when you have some money.

I agree with PPs re. replacing the wall tile and bath panel. I think I'd put my money into a new shower unit so that I could feel clean every day.
I'd leave the floor tile for now and refresh the grout. If there are any issues with loose/grubby silicone around the bath/sink I'd replace that too.I'd also paint the vanity, replace handles/taps and then work with the decor but keep it tonal to work with, rather than against, the existing tile.

@TattoedLady
that's great! What designer program did you use? I'd love to be able to do it with my kitchen.
TattoedLady · Yesterday 16:30
@WinterMusings I just did this on my Mac using pages...edit mask, instant alpha, couple of shapes and copy paste.
For my kitchen I used the ikea kitchen planner to get the basic gist of what I wanted. It's very simple to use, easy move cupboards/appliances around and get an approximation of your colour scheme(ish).
