Twickenham Heathrow Flight Path…..will I be drowned out?

Blackwidow47 · 15/03/2023 22:46

My offer on a property has been accepted and hopefully all going well I’m moving from East Sussex to Twickenham. At each viewing it’s been relatively quiet and lovely, then I visited the area for a walk round and the planes sounded really loud, now I get that it’s next to Heathrow but I just wondered how disruptive they really will be?

Please can anyone local or previously lived in the area put my mind to rest? as I’m panicking. I did view a property in Isleworth and the noise seemed much louder there.

I think as I can’t visit often I’ve “ramped” up the volume in my head and imagining buildings to vibrate as the planes pass overhead…..

@SilentHedges yes that was our experience in Windsor - and my friends too who lived in Whitton . I love south west London but prefer Ham, Teddington and kingston mainly because of my 'flight path' experience in Windsor. We lived near marble hill park at one point and that was quite bearable-

@Crikeyalmighty Likewise, I've also lived in Central Windsor. Awful!

Where I am passenger aircraft are either 20,000ft up, or "interesting" vintage, army or private jets routing around Blackbushe, Farnborough, Chobham etc.

Flightradar24 is everyone's friend!

I lived in Isleworth, the planes were so low when landing you could practically see what colour the pilot's eyes were. Didn't mind it though, just got used to it (every 45 seconds!)

Crikeyalmighty · 16/03/2023 20:59

@SilentHedges we live in Bath, so it's a rare sighting! But the experience made me really aware of what some people say you get used to varies!! We managed 7 months in Windsor and had to move - planes roaring in at just before midnight and 4.35am- I was totally sleep deprived- and sitting on your garden was impossible many days - my father in law refused to stay overnight after the 1st time- lol!

Thank you so much everyone for your feedback and calming me down. I am so excited to move to Twickenham, it’s accessibility to the city, lots of main roads , motorways, trains and of course the airport.

Im super excited and have heard so many wonderful positive stories of the area and your words just echo all this and more.

@helloimnew123 I’m moving near The Green. A beautiful road (like most of them). I’ve driven through Teddington and Richmond and they both seem equally lovely. I wish you all the best in your search, how far along are you to making this a reality?

We are looking on the counties estate, hopefully to find a nice family home.
Twickenham is lovely, loads going on and very well connected.

Hopefully the A316, the planes and the rugby don't drive us mad 🤣

I moved to central Twickenham one month ago. Had I known how totally awful the plane noise is I would never have bought the property. It is totally horrendous.

Today Sunday the planes are flying every couple of minutes and they started at 6:30 in the morning. During the week in the evening it is the same. I’m just off the high street. I have never, ever experienced anything like it. A Quick Look online revealed pressure groups from lots and lots of people who feel the same. I will sell up as soon as I can. So disappointed as Twickenham was my dream area.

OneForTheToad · 19/05/2024 15:55

A plane every 45 seconds, basically all day every day. I used to live in Teddington, didn’t really bother me. I have friends in Twickers and Isleworth, and the noise is very noticeable. I think they ignore it for the most part, but I couldn’t stand it. Summer bbq’s are a noisy affair!

Crikeyalmighty · 19/05/2024 16:10

We lived in st Margaret's for a while near Orleans park and it was fine- kind of 'there' but in the distance- we did however live in Windsor at one point and literally never learned to drown it out- it was unbelievably loud and I could virtually wave to the pilot- but it was intermittent - often enough though to make it that we moved very quickly (7 months) ! ,

Crikeyalmighty · 19/05/2024 16:13

@OneForTheToad yep if I was moving to Twickenham if I'm honest it would be that Orleans park side only or right down towards strawberry hill/teddingon - but we are all different I know-

justpeachy1234 · 19/05/2024 16:17

We moved from teddington to twickenham green and yeah the planes are frequent atm but the flight path rotates. We go months with nothing, then maybe 3/4 weeks with frequent planes.

It's not ideal, but I guess if you want to live in a connected area, noise comes with the territory. Heathrow is only 15 mins drive away

justpeachy1234 · 19/05/2024 16:17

@Blackwidow47 did you move in the end?

hi, I went to school in the area for several years. It can be quite disruptive, but you get used to it. It's loud around richmond too and why I wouldn't buy there. It puts off a lot of buyers for resale. Good luck

LindaDawn · 19/05/2024 19:52

I lived at the end of the runway in Longford for 3.5 years. I can honestly say the noise never bothered me. I loved to see the planes. Did have visitors who seemed a little surprised with the noise. Moved further out now but not because of the plane noise. However have family who live very close to airport that I visit regularly and they nor me mind the noise, in fact just love looking up to see the planes. So many houses will have some sort of noise living near the airport. Hope this helps.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/05/2024 19:56

IT WILL BE FINE. YOU DON'T NOTICE IT AFTER A WHILE.
IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT ON ME.
I SAY, IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT ON ME.

Blackwidow47 · 18/06/2024 09:14

##Update##

I never realised people were still responding! yes I did move and it’s brilliant, I think in a year I’ve had 2 weeks of loud in total, either due to wind direction or a change in flight path/routes. It’s funny reading this back as I had to stop and think if I could hear any planes or when I last did,

I love living here, a beautiful part of Greater London with access to everything. Thank you to all who replied.

Hi all, don’t want to be a bearer of bad news. We just moved onto Spencer road near the green. We have been here about a month and I have to say there have been about 10 times so far that the noise has been so deafening it sounds like the plane is going to land on our house. To the point where we can’t even watch tv without headphones because you just can’t hear it. My husband convinced me it wouldn’t be a concern, but 🤯😂

Thegypsyromance · 30/08/2024 22:56

We live between the green and strawberry hill and it is literally like planes are landing on us. One was so low today I actually panicked.

We just moved from Australia and I am devastated we didn’t pick Parsons green or Richmond. Better yet just headed to the Cotswolds for complete silence.

Ive never been this sleep deprived! We can’t even hear our tv

Crikeyalmighty · 30/08/2024 23:06

We lived in east Twickenham at one point near marble hill park- occasionally loud but reasonably liveable-however having lived in Windsor for 7 months- that honestly was ridiculous- I was utterly sleep deprived as was H -luckily we rented and that was the point we moved to a rental in east Twickenham-I had a friend in st Margaret's heading towards isle worth and that was really bad too !!

We live in Bath now if ever I went back to south west London would be going to Teddington, Ham, Surbiton or north Kingston- not totally silent - but off the main flight path - Richmond, Twickenham and Kew for me don't work - love the area- but can't cope with 5.45am and 12pm planes overhead

HerculesMulligan · 30/08/2024 23:49

@Thegypsyromance we lived for 5 years on Spencer Road (top floor flat on the corner) and loved it. I hardly remember the plane noise.

However, we now live about half a mile away and this has definitely been a noisy weekend for the planes - it depends on wind direction and they are certainly low over us at the moment. I promise in a few days when the wind changes the noise wont be so bad.
