Hiring a skip

Hi All
I'm looking to hire a skip to get rid of some garden waste and general cellar clutter before we move house. We're in a terraced house with no parking space. Will I need a permit? Or is that something the skip company will sort for me? Has anyone got some more tips? I've never done this before, so I'm a skip virgin!

Your local Council website might have information on skip permits. It's likely you need to apply yourself.

If you’re putting it on the public road you need to apply for a permit. If it’s on your private drive or garden you don’t. The skip hire company just delivers the skip and takes it away, the rest is up to you.

Some skip companies arrange the permit - just ask them. Beware of companies that add conditions AFTER you have paid up front - eg no fridges, extra for mattresses.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm also lookin at Hippobags, as I might be able to fit one in my front yard.

We hired one and the company definitely would take care of skip permits if asked. Just ask.

Make sure you get a big enough skip, we got an 8 yard one ( holds 8 cubic yards)
which is the normal size builders skip. We had people from all over asking to put stuff in it.

Where I live the cheapest place to rent a skip is from the council. If you did it through them you could sort the permit at the same time.

It might be easier and cheaper to contact one of the waste clearance companies. I've used skips for building rubble, and the entire street seemed to dump their waste in it as soon as my back was turned. If you do get one, you need to fill it and get it removed as fast as possible before everyone else fills it up!

We were going to hire a skip, but in the end we found a recommendation local guy who took it alway. It was cheaper than a skip and we didn’t have to deal with it being in our drive etc. if you go down this route make sure that he has references and not a fly tipper.

I think hippo bags are expensive for what they are.

What about your local tip ?
