Exposed Kitchen Cabinet Legs

Does anyone have a kitchen where the lower cabinets have exposed feet (i.e. no toe-kick/plinth)?

Do you like it/hate it?

Is it a totally ridiculous idea? Will it actually generate more cleaning?

I like the look and the idea of being able to clean under the cabinets. Of course, no plinth means added expense from having to extend the flooring under the cabinets.

Hate it.
I saw a house listed on RM and the kitchen cabinets had chrome legs. It ruined the look of what was obviously a really expensive kitchen. It looked unfinished somehow.

I had this albeit accidentally for a while and I hated it. I found it almost impossible to clean all the way to the back of the cupboards. It never felt properly clean or finished.

Having said that I do like the look of it, and would just make sure that the flooring finish under the cabinets was as good as if it was really visible and make sure I had something long enough to clean under them with.

Hmm, ok. Having seconds thoughts. Our kitchen is very dark, with a low ceiling - I was hoping that perhaps having the cabinets off the floor might make it look a little lighter and less cramped.

I'm not fond of the stainless steel legs @Bumblbeestungmyknee - I'd go for wooden ones.

We have it (chosen by previous owners) and also hate it as difficult to keep clean. My main priority when we redecorate will be plinths!

Blurpy · 12/03/2023 12:25

Yikes, ok. Maybe not, then! Thanks all for your thoughts.

To those who have it and dislike it, is it not possible to fit a plinth in front of these legs? I suppose they're set too far forward?

Difficult to say if it’s too far forward enough. My concern would be attaching the plinth to the leg as they’re tapered and being able to find the right size attachment

Justforlaffs · 12/03/2023 16:03

I hate this too.

I have this in the kitchen I moved into. I absolutely hate it, it always feels dirty, and I got a eufy hoover specifically to get under . Definitely don’t !

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 12/03/2023 16:17

I had an island unit on higher legs, not as high as a breakfast bar though. It was installed on top of an existing very beautiful ceramic tiled floor. We had wicker baskets underneath for extra storage of not much used things. It worked very well. I just pulled the baskets out and mopped beneath

you used to be able to get plinth drawers, a friend had them and they were great for trays, baking dishes etc.

BlueHexagon · 12/03/2023 16:17

I had this in our last kitchen and it drove me mad. Every time I dropped anything it would always roll right underneath and be really difficult to get at.

Adding lighting under the cabs with a plinth might help things look lighter in your kitchen?

I don't like it, it reminds me of when DH fitted the kitchen and the last bit, the plinths didn't seem to get done very quickly.

SpaceNambo · 12/03/2023 16:44

Perfect for spiders. Ditto mice should you have any holes. Although any dropped food can be handily kicked under. Also cats toys etc.

SwedishEdith · 12/03/2023 16:55

We've got it in ours with chrome legs. Not sure about more cleaning as easy enough to get the mop under but I'm not that domesticated. It's good for storage of wine/extra cans. Pretty sure you could just add plinths anyway to the chrome legs as they just clip on. I always think floors with plinths must be pretty grubby behind the plinths whenever any liquid spills on the floor and goes under them.

melonraspberry · 12/03/2023 20:39

I’ve got an old wooden kitchen though and would love to add plinths but can’t work out what would look ok!

God yes, this is us currently.....in fact its been like this for 4+ years! We have a lovely HMKOC kitchen but the one thing letting it down is that DH still has to fit the plinths/kickboards.

As we're planning to sell soon I imagine it'll be one of those jobs that gets done immediately prior to marketing!

It's bloody annoying as our dogs are forever losing balls underneath and they always roll right to the back. Ditto anything that gets dropped.

TiggeryBear · 13/03/2023 00:57

We replaced our kitchen on a very tight budget when we moved in 7.5 years ago. I'm still waiting to get kickboards for under the damn cupboards. (Not to mention we still dont have any doors on the cupboards! 🙈🤣) I hate it! I vaccum & mop regularly under the cupboards but never feel that it's completely clean under there. I'd love to completely rip the kitchen out & start again, but that's a whole other can of worms that I can do without opening. (Plus I think DP would kill me if I even suggested that I wanted too 😬🤣)

Ah, there is that!

Really good idea about the lighting, thank you!

Now, see, I would love to have exposed legs, and flooring that goes all the way to the back. Very specific reason though. My cat catches and loses mice, and the mice ALWAYS manage to get under the cabinets, and I then have to spend hours and days taking the kick boards out, and rummaging about under the units with all the dust and dirt and spiders, trying to catch the buggers. We have also had one or two dying under there, and the smell is revolting.

emmyren4 · 13/03/2023 17:45

Our island is on legs, similar to this. I love it and find it very easy to clean under, but being an island, it's easy to reach under from both sides.
