Moving to Canterbury

We are looking at moving to Canterbury and wondered what the area is like generally, and if there are any areas to avoid?

We'd like to live somewhere perhaps on the outskirst in a nice cul de sac, away from the hustle and bustle (if Canterbury has that), and then go into Canterbury for entertainment and nights out etc, so ideally no more than 15-20 mins away from the center.

Could anyone tell me what the commute into London is like by train? Plenty of parking at the station, seats on the train etc? It seems quite convenient if i had to do it a couple of times a week for work.

Avoid, it is one of the new authoritarian anti car gulag cities.

Try to avoid the many student areas.

Honestly, I’d look at the coastal towns, rather than Canterbury itself. But I am biased.

Oh no please tell me not here as well? I'd be isolated if i couldn't use my car

As above they are going to create driving 'zones' so you have to go out and come back in again to move from zone to zone.

If you are commuting twice a week maybe Ashford or Folkestone?

It could end up being not at all. My contracts vary by location. I was looking at Aylesham. I think I may get a bit bored too far out of Canterbury as I would like to go there for nights out, meet ups etc.

Blean, Tyler Hill, Roughcommon all nice on outskirts of Canterbury and villages on other side, Wingham, Littlebourrne, Adisham, Patrixbourne, Bridge, Barham to name a few

Are u still looking OP
If so
Kids went to school there.
We went to Uni there and live nearby now,
Its gorgeous.

Not really a cul de sac type area as there’s no room since it’s a very old city.
Within the walls is obviously the most expensive and best place to live.( v little parking )
Outside the walls it’s close together housing, terraces, semis etc Some lovely ones with parking all old.

Look at the Old Dover road or Tyler hill.
Or on the hill / near the University.

Trains to london go to many stations 1hr to 1hr30 depending on station.
seats not a problem.

Wye might be better. Large village between Ashford and Canterbury. Ashford is better for commuting to London, but Canterbury is beautiful. Wye has its own train station as well so teenagers can easily go in either direction for meeting up with friends, plus good primary and secondary school

@Sofia109 did you move? I’m looking at this move from London to Canterbury at the moment.

HI All,

I appreciate your sincere advice.
I am planning to move to Kent for job purpose. I will rotate through different hospitals mostly in the east Kent site.
I wonder the best place to buy a property considering good schools, transport network, security etc. What about Canterbury/Maidstone or Ashford? we live to town areas mostly.

Thanks
