Do you have any recommendations?

I stayed in an Air BnB that had the Ikea Hemnes day bed in the room. It was very comfortable. It was in permanent use, but hadn't sagged or deteriorated at all. I'd defintitely recommend it.

We bought a "Relyon" brand sofa bed from John Lewis when we bought our first house 23 years ago. For about a year it was our only sofa and bed. Over the years it has been used full time for a few months by a friend working nearby, weekly for a couple of years by FiL, nightly for a good year or more when dd was the amazing non-sleeping baby and sporadically by visitors. Now the teens lounge on it for gaming, and it is still our only spare bed. I slept on it a couple of nights ago (dh snoring!) and I can vouch that it is still perfectly comfortable.

AinmÁlainn · 08/03/2023 19:58

Ikea Hemnes as above

CourgetteLeek · 08/03/2023 22:10

IKEA Hemnes has proper mattresses. Definitely suitable for every night, looks more bed than sofa but can be dressed up. There are kits on Etsy to make extra sofa-y, or just choice of pillows etc.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/03/2023 22:21

Another vote for the Ikea Hemnes for sleep comfort, I slept on mine for almost a year when I lived in a tiny studio waiting for my house purchase to complete and it was as comfortable as any bed. However, it’s not a great sofa: I was also using it as my main one and had to invest in a lot of good quality cushions to make it comfortable enough to enjoy sitting on.

The only sofa-beds I’ve found do really well as both beds and sofas are traditional style slatted futons with a thick good quality mattress.

minipie · 08/03/2023 23:32

Do you need it to be a sofa in the day? If not I’d really consider a wallbed instead, as you can fit a proper thick mattress (even the best sofabeds have thin mattresses so they can fold) and you can also just fold it up with all the bedding still on, so easy peasy to used daily.

FerretFumbler · 09/03/2023 12:48

The trouble with the Ilea Hermes is that I think it looks like a bed. I had one, bought bolster cushions, throws etc and tried to make it like a sofa, but it was still too much like a bed.

I searched high and low and couldn’t find one that was good as a bed and good as a sofa.
I now have a proper settee and 2 inflatable air bed things which I use for visitors.

DoesItHaveKosovo · 09/03/2023 12:53

The IKEA Brimnes daybed is great and has lots of storage. I sleep on ours about half the week and it’s so comfortable. Two single mattresses piled up together, or pulled out into a double.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 09/03/2023 15:17

I can’t say how it is yet but we’ve just ordered a Willow and Hall sofa bed and the mattress looks vastly superior to anything else in the same price bracket. We don’t have a spare room so it’s important to us to have a comfortable sofa bed for guests which is also our only sofa.

wantmorenow · 09/03/2023 22:53

I have the single version of this. It's very comfy if you like a firm mattress

I have slept on an Ikea Friheten, which was surprisingly comfortable.

Fedupofdiets · 10/03/2023 05:59

Swyft - although not cheap are very comfy and look lovely.

aspies · 10/03/2023 07:41

It does need to be completely multi functional. I want it to look like a proper sofa in the day as it will be a heavily used proper lounge. But it also needs to make up a proper bedroom for us when we frequently have people stay. This is our only spare room. It's our second lounge, which is the perfect size for a bedroom and will be treated as such!

So, yes, I've already ruled out the look of a day bed. Prepared to pay for something that fits the bill. Am looking at dfs, furniture village, cocoon, willow and hall. Thanks for any suggestions!

I think a decent futon is the best type, we have used Futon Company. Get a more expensive mattress.

I’ve looked for 30 years plus for a good sofabed thatis both a very comfortable bed and comfortable sofa
i reached the conclusion some years ago that they don’t exist

someare good beds. Some are good sofas. Engineering doesn’t really work to make them both

the best I got was ikea Fritheten but I even here I needed to get different inners to back cushions as they were crap, and add a good mattress topper when used as a bed. It did work well but people say with heavy use the base cushions start to break down

thexpnsive ones often have the pull out frame inside. If you’ve slept on one the frame edges are horrible, and pillows fall down behind the gap at the head. The sofa is then also pretty uncomfortable because of the metal outer frame

I agree if you have space consider a Murphy bed- very popular in states but less so in uk

i accept that you aren’t going to find a unicorn, and decide Ifyou are going to compromise on the bed part or sofa part

I have one of these now. It is a decent bed when you add a mattress topper for guests. It is a very firm and upright sofa that is more like sitting in a chair. Works for me as in my study so only use sofa for a little while on conference calls, a cuppa etc, but I wouldn’t want it is my main sofa . It’s also not the prettiest to look at - but then it is small and compact when folded and a full long double when open ( 2m which I need as have 6 foot 6 dc)

Whiteroomjoy · 10/03/2023 08:06

Other thing to look at if you have easy access storage space is a good old fashioned z- bed. I grew up with these in my mums and grans houses. Decent enough beds for short stays and don’t try to do anything else

HyacinthineMacaw · 10/03/2023 08:19

Have a search for clic clan sofa beds. They have a hinge between the back and the seat, which are each the same construction, and you just click the back out of position and swing it down, to create a fully flat double bed. They are much firmer and more like a proper bed than a traditional sofa bed, and also look properly like a sofa when the back is upright.

We had one in a rental flat donkeys years ago, and it was great - felt just like a proper bed to sleep on.

sleeplessseattles · 10/03/2023 08:24

Ikea gronlid is like a normal sofa but works well as a sofa bed too

We have the Friheten. Very comfortable as both sofa and bed, firm. Also good storage underneath for the bedding and easy to convert.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/03/2023 08:57

the good thing about sofa beds that are not as comfortable as beds is that visitors are likely not to stay too long...

tbh it depends how often and how many visitors you expect and what the primary use of the room is.
for a single visitor a simple pull out sofa is absolutely fine. not so much for 2, but still ok for a single night.

We've just ordered one of these. They are expensive, but we often have overnight guests so we wanted something serviceable. We went to a showroom and tried them out, and the mattress is quite thick and comfortable (we might get a mattress topper too).

We also liked the look of Loaf and Willow & Hall. They all offer wider sofa beds (suitable for two adults to sleep comfortably) and thick sprung mattresses. I recommend visiting a showroom if you can.

minipie · 10/03/2023 11:16

Ah ok if it’s frequent visitors but different ones, then that’s easier because each visitor will only be staying a short while. A thinner or harder bed is bearable for a couple of nights.

I thought you were looking for something the same person would sleep on a lot in which case you’d really need a proper mattress IMO.

Oh I looked at these. They look amazing. Which style did you go for?
