Fitted Wardrobes Help! IKEA pax?!

Hello there!

I'm looking to get some fitted wardrobes from IKEA, but feel I need some guidance. I love that I can go in and completely create my own, but does anyone have any downsides to these wardrobes?

Has anyone paid to have them fitted by IKEA, or is it worth getting a local 'handyman' in to do it? I know they can be built by myself, but I've seen they take hours / a whole day and I'm planning on having them delivered the day I move into my new house so they are up and running asap. I'm moving in alone, so all building and unpacking is down to me.

Or can anyone else advise another company for fitted wardrobes? I'm moving into a new build and will only get in once for a measure before actually moving in, so can't have companies coming into measure before quoting.

Thanks in advance!

We had pax in our old house - if the pic has uploaded correctly you can see it below

They are so nice.

OK, so I'm definitely sold on the Pax. Loving the pic!!

Pax moved from one house to next. Removals took them down and put them back up. They shaved a bit off the bottom so they’d fit in the new house. Couldn’t tell at all. I’ve now passed them onto a friend for their loft.

We have Pax in all the bedrooms. I used a company called Unflatpack to get them fitted, as in properly fitted wardrobes. I used ikea doors for one wardrobe (see photo with wooden doors) and also had some painted doors made by Noremax in our choice of colours in two rooms (teenage DD chose the colours for her room - they actually look really good in the flesh, not as garish as the photo suggests). The Noremax doors are slightly longer than standard ikea doors, so they cover the plinth for a fitted look.

Unflatpack’s work included a whole walk in wardrobe under a sloped ceiling - the dressing room photo shows about one third of the total wardrobe. They also built a wood veneer surround for one of the wardrobes, carefully matching the veneer so it looks continuous.

I love them. They pack a huge amount of storage. I especially love the pull out trays, glass shelves and jewellery inserts. High shelves are perfect for suitcases and hat boxes. The drawers also take a huge amount of stuff. I use one of the pull out trays to wrap all the Christmas and birthday presents - it’s the perfect height and saves my back.

Bespoke joinery would have looked even better, but would have cost at least three times more. I know because we had bespoke joinery done in other parts of the house.

I’m not a fan of sliding doors, I always feel like the stuff I need is in the section I just covered with the sliding door! Hence why my dressing room is all open. There would be too many doors in a small space otherwise. I like seeing all my clothes at once. I also have shelves for bedding, shoes, handbags etc.

I love these!

Everyone's really sold these to me. Now I just need to get in and measured at the new house so I can go and design my own!!

My joiner made my PAX a fitted unit. It's doable if you have someone who is useful!

I have the pax innards in my hall with a custom built frame. So it means the drawers are less gabby. And I have the pull out tray where I keep the lap top and use there if it’s for a short period.

Im thinking pax innards in an alcove might be worth looking into

Paddingtonthebear · 09/03/2023 19:38

Just orders a big set of Pax wardrobes this week for the first time. TaskRabbit did quote but I’ve found someone local who builds flat pack for a living and is cheaper. Will still take him 5-6 hours.

Dd has them, it was cheaper for a handyman to do them, and he did do wall fixings. If they were going in an alcove I'm sure a handyman could make them look fitted.

We also have Pax in every room and ALSO used Unflatpack (Dexter did ours @Yellownotblue - maybe he did yours). They look completely fitted as they help you buy the extra panels and doors you need and then cut from these pieces to fill gaps. We have a run of 7 doors in the master bedroom which they cut to fit the slope of the eaves and I love them.
