Has anyone installed LVT themselves?

I'm thinking of taking up the carpet on our landing and in our bedroom and replacing with LVT (we already have Amtico downstairs).

Mainly as we have four pets and the carpet in these areas is just trashed frankly and it retains that lingering 'pet smell'.

I just feel like LVT with rugs I can easily wash and air would work better for us.

We don't have a lot of spare cash though so I was considering buying leftover LVT on eBay and installing myself.

Has anyone done this?

Anything you wish you'd known or thought about in advance?

Any tutorials you found particularly helpful?

I'm a novice DIYer but not afraid of a challenge (my two DIY jobs so far were putting up a curtain rail and then straight on to building a whole media wall with an inset electric fireplace including plastering it myself).

I think it's the screeding you'd find tricky.

I installed it in a toilet, the LVT click tile effect stuff. Didn't have to screed the floor I put down some plywood over the floorboards. It was OK to install but a bit of a pain when I had to get round funny shapes and it isn't as easy to cut as you might think. You have to really push down on the knife to score it well enough to snap, even though it looks like hardly any effort at all in the YouTube videos.

Things to remember:

  • you need to leave a small gap around the edges for expansion due to changes in temperature so you'll need to get some beading to cover that along the skirting or remove the skirting and reinstall it afterwards allowing for the gap.
  • get/borrow a metal ruler for cutting along to get straight lines
  • practice fitting them together before you get started, you need to slot them together at a bit of an angle for them to properly click
  • if you have any odd shaped corners or pipes you need to go round then work out your plan before you start
