We've just made the somewhat bittersweet decision not to try for DC (can't be arsed to share the back story as not that relevant)

But...looking on the bright side it means the room I wasn't doing a lot with in case it was needed as a nursery is now mine to use for entirely selfish purposes.

I'm thinking dressing room - somewhere I can have my clothes hung up for the next day, my coats, shoes, accessories, make up and beauty stuff and a nice dressing table of some kind.

Really interested to see what other people have done....doesn't matter if it's a room or a corner of your bedroom.

Also if anyone has done a dressing room or similar space and has things they wish they'd thought of / things that really worked well / things they wish they hadn't done in hindsight?

I don't have a dressing room but I do have around 16 feet of wardrobe space in my bedroom. It has shelves for handbags and a pull out drawer with glass shelf for accessories. I have pull out shoe shelves which is great for determining what to wear. Large full height mirror and a couple of seating options plus dressing table for getting ready although I end up just doing my makeup in the bathroom.

Similar to you, I ended up with a small spare room which I now use as a dressing room. Fitted mirrored wardrobe so one wall is effectively a mirror which I love. I also have a long clothes rail where I plan and put up my work outfits, with the shoes I am going to wear with them. Helps be organised in the morning. Bloody love it - fave place in my house.

Thanks both...

Originally I was thinking of having open wardrobes as they look nice in photos but I've realised that's because they hang about ten colour co-ordinated items on them not the jumble of stuff a normal persons wardrobe has in it!

I definitely want one open rail though for the same purpose - setting out clothes for the week ahead.

It's only a single size bedroom so it's going to be interesting to get the storage I want without it feeling too claustrophobic

My dressing room is long and quite narrow - 17 foot long. It's a bit of an odd room tbh, the previous owners had it as their office and spare storage. It also houses the boiler (out of sight).

I have Ikea partly mirrored wardrobes in the recess along one wall, which were there previously. At the short wall at one end I have an ottoman and a very ornate mirror on a brown feature wall, to foreshorten the room. In that corner I also have an antique corner 'whatnot' unit on which I display photos, candles, fake plants, etc. Along the other long wall opposite the wardrobes I have chests of drawers and some wicker baskets. Also a shelving unit for handbags. On the other short wall near the door I have another shelving unit for shoes. Also more wicker baskets for junk jewellery, belts etc.

I have an oriental rug on the floor and a faux fur throw on the ottoman - both in shades of grey and brown. The floor is quite a cheap laminate, so it's better covered up as much as possible. On another brown wall adjoining the wardrobe I have an Italian marquetry panel of all different colours of wood. I'm sure my room wouldn't appeal to everyone - it's an eclectic mix - but I love it. It doesn't feel claustrophobic at all - the other walls are pale and I have white plain voile curtains at the two sets of windows.

Thinks to self, must get up there and have a clear out!!!!

I don't recommend open clothes rails as the clothes get dusty.

You can get round this by storing everything in suit covers, but I still think that wardrobes with doors are better.

I was amazed by how much space I need for make up and skin care. I don't think I have a lot, but it still seems to take up 2 full drawers. Also, compartments in the drawers really help.

If you're planning to sit in there to do make up, get a good mirror with light around it.

How much are you willing to spend? A fully fitted wardrobe with plenty of drawers, shelves etc is expensive, but having the right combo is so good. No point in loads of hanging space if you have more jeans than dresses. I'd suggest actually measuring up how much rail space you want for full or half height hanging, how many shelves your shoes will take up etc. Then try to give yourself a bit extra, as I'm sure you'll want to buy a few new things to go in the new room.

Realise none of us have uploaded pics and since I don't actually have a dressing room these images may not be useful.
I second what the other pp mentioned around open wardrobes being dusty. Before I had the doors installed on my wardrobe I had all my clothes in for about a week and it looked amazing! My cleaner however almost had an anxiety attack when she saw it. She was scared I was keeping it like that and she mentioned the dust!
Also second the lighting need around the dressing table. Its why I use the ensuite which has superb lighting.
Anyway hope the images help a tiny bit.

I am sighing with envy now.

@SirVixofVixHall haha well our posts crossed and I've just uploaded pics. In my old house I had stuff in my son's bedroom, under the bed and in the spare room as the storage and wardrobe options were dire.
So I really thought through what I wanted and needed and so far, so good. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a dedicated room but what I have now works!

I have a stupid amount of clothing, and it is all in chaos. I long for a dressing room but we don’t have space. DH has actually promised me a barn in the future …

Twizbe · 07/03/2023 15:12

We have a dressing room. It's our spare room but we use it as an extension of our room.

They are next door to each other so we added a pocket door between the two. We can close it off if we have guests but most of the time it's open.

We have a corner of fitted wardrobes and a dressing table for me.

We got a lovely sofa bed from cocoon which is stylish and comfy.

It has quite a masculine vibe in there but I love it.
