Fire Alarm

I don’t know where to add this thread but really hoping that someone can help before I go insane. Fire alarm with a non replaceable battery has decided to die and is continuously beeping, it was from upstairs so we replaced it with a normal battery operated one and left this beeping one downstairs hoping it will die out. Omg were we wrong, it’s kept us awake since Friday night, last night DH put it outside in the bin just so we could get some sleep. I’ve told him he needs to take it out before we forget but we’re at a loss as to how to stop it beeping until we can get over to the recycling centre (most probably in a couple of weeks). I feel like I’m going insane because I can still hear it in the bin. Please help.

Put it in a bag and beat with a hammer repeatedly.

It'll be therapeutic as well

I was just coming on to say the same Grin

@Surplus2requirements trust me I’ve seriously thought about it but scared the battery will explode 😂😂. It says to refer to the instructions, it’s 10 years old! I don’t know where instructions are for items bought last month let alone 10 years ago. It’s still in the bin because when we took it out it was so loud the neighbours would have complained. I’ve put a huge note on the fridge to remember to remove it before bin collection day.

Why take it out the bin? just let it go and buy a new one?

Creativebee · 09/03/2023 17:49

@morbidcuriosity I’m sure I read somewhere that batteries can explode and need to be disposed of at the recycling centre. I’m assuming there’s a battery in this alarm although I can’t seem to get to it.

What did you do in the end? Honestly I would of left it in the bin. maybe thats wrong then, but it would of been easy too.

Creativebee · 11/03/2023 09:20

@morbidcuriosity I took it out the bin before they were collected, it was still beeping but with the snow it has stopped. I’ve been told that our local Sainsbury’s has a recycling facility for electrical items (I’m not sure this info is correct but I’ll find out and if not recycling centre isn’t too far). Seems a lot of hassle for a fire alarm but I am a major over thinker.

We can put small electrical items with the recycling for collection.. just a carrier bag on top of the bin. Might be worth checking?

greenspaces4peace · 11/03/2023 09:26

Don’t you just disconnect the battery?
I know it’s tricky to find it sometimes but it’s in the unit, you twist to open it further.

Drown it - try putting it in a bucketful of cold water and putting it in your garden. Had something similar a few years ago and that finally stopped it. Fingers crossed that works for you. 🌹
