Hi all, we just got a quote for new glass / doors and am a bit surprised at how much it costs! Can I just sense check these with Mumsnetters who have bought similar products recently?

they are aluminium frames

French doors with side panels and top light -2800 x 2400
French doors with top light - 1700 x 2400
£5,900

3 panel sliding doors; ultra slim, 20mm profiles - 4200 x 2400
£6,800

Installation- £3,600

Total - £16,300 excl. VAT/ £19560 incl. VAT

This is double what we had budgeted so we are a bit surprised!

We are in West London so if anyone has recommendations for suppliers, that would be much appreciated too. Thanks very much

If they’re aluminium I’m not surprised. This is why people get grey upvc, to replicate the look of aluminium without the price tag.

IME they usually come back with a big discount if you say it's too pricey.

Caspianberg · 04/03/2023 18:49

Seems average .

Our 4 panel sliding doors are around 5m long and cost €10k approx 2 years ago. There was fitting on top as well. They are aluminium outside and oak inside

GoodChat · 04/03/2023 18:54

Someone's having you on. We're having French doors with 2 side panels and a different window completely redone for £3,000 including fittings

GoodChat · 04/03/2023 18:55

Oh I missed the aluminium but

stepkidscopingstrategy · 04/03/2023 19:20

I bought and and sold 2 lots of French doors on Facebook market place - we paid 150 for the ones we bought - and I sold some we had for 100 pounds. They were both in fab condition. Just taken out because of renovations to the house (we were both extending)

Grumpybutfunny · 04/03/2023 19:25

They are aluminium go for grey PVC to keep the cost down

CoolShoeshine · 04/03/2023 21:31

Aluminium French doors last year, basic 2m width, different colour exterior to interior, £3k inc fitting

Littlessweepy · 04/03/2023 21:47

Seems about right to be honest for 3, as depressing as that is. I’ve paid a bit less but mine are smaller and standard 2.1m height.

Caspianberg · 05/03/2023 05:36

@Grumpybutfunny - why grey pvc? Aluminium frames aren’t just grey, they come in every colour possible. Ours are Matt black outside (ral 9005), and solid oak inside. So just swapping to grey pvc would be a very different look.
I wouldn’t recommend pvc if you live somewhere with extremes like hot, cold or salt air if near the sea as they won’t last

I was just quoted £12k for a single front door...insane!

DibbleDooDah · 06/03/2023 12:42

Sounds about right. Currently building a house with three sets of French doors and the rest normal windows - all aluminium. Comes to £50k but we don’t have to pay the VAT.

Our current house is in a conservation area and we had to have wooden French door replacements. They were £5k each plus VAT.
