Curtains in the kitchen?

We’re renovating a house and turning what’s currently a reception room into a kitchen. It’s v country cottage-style, quite low ceilings, beams etc.

I’m not sure what to have on the windows. I’ve never had curtains in the kitchen before- are they tricky to keep clean? I think a roller blind will look too modern.

Would be interested to know what other people have. Thanks.

nope 👎🏻

I’d never have curtains in a kitchen. If your overlooked plantation shutters might blend with a cottage look.

daisypond · 04/03/2023 14:43

I have curtains in mine. But it’s a big room and the curtains aren’t in the kitchen bit - they are near the sofa and desk area.

Is it near the kitchen working area or where you sit and eat, I think away from the kitchen working area it would be ok

It’s within a few metres so probably too near. Would a Roman blind be better- to me they seem to have the same problem as curtains?

thank you, all.

In my experience, curtains hold damp and odours! Currently have a blind but it’s got some sort of coating on it so doesn’t hold damp or yesterday’s curry stink!

Kitchenette · 04/03/2023 18:37

It’s this sort of look

If it was me and the window wasn't overlooked I would have a simple roller blind. Probably a thermal blackout blind in a pale colour so you wouldn't really notice it when wound up and then can lower it at night in the winter to keep warmth in.

seratoninmoonbeams · 04/03/2023 19:54

But saying that I'm a curtain hater. I moved five years ago and I don't have a single curtain in the house. 😆

Do you need anything?

dreamersdown · 05/03/2023 03:29

So a roller blind, like in this pic?

It’s a Roman blind, I think- if you look at the left of it you can see the folds.

You can’t put curtains in a kitchen, they will attract grease and dust. It’s like putting carpet in your bathroom

so it needs to be something easy to clean or keep out the way. Blinds. Either Roman or Venetian or shutters. You can also get thick slat blinds that look like shutters but are lower cost and don’t reduce so much light in the room

PaulaPaola · 05/03/2023 08:15

I have readymade IKEA curtains in the front (dining) end of my kitchen, facing the street. It's quicker to take them down and throw them in the wash than it would be painstakingly wiping down each slat of a plantation shutter. And I don't see how you would ever clean a roller blind. The other window, at the back of the house, has nothing.

MNisMyGuiltyPleasure · 05/03/2023 08:17

Cafe curtains and you can put them in the washing machine regularly.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 05/03/2023 09:14

I don't have anything in my kitchen. It does look out to the garden, and no one can see in though.

TattiePants · 05/03/2023 16:32

I’d choose a Roman blind over curtains although I have curtains across the French doors in my kitchen as well as a Roman blind at the window. It’s fine to have fabric in the kitchen as long as you have good ventilation / extraction. I’ve had the same sofa in my kitchen for over 14 years and it doesn’t smell.

CambsAlways · 05/03/2023 16:34

No we have vertical blinds

CambsAlways · 05/03/2023 16:34

Sorry should have said Venetian blinds 🤣

MrsJamin · 05/03/2023 17:08

I was going to suggest cafe curtains, something like this. You could just pop them in the washing machine. A bit of material really cozies up a space and absorbs sound so it's not so echoey.
