Do you currently have solid or suspended floors?

HandlesFruit · 03/03/2023 07:02

A friend of mine has this- looks great but apparently it’s a lot of work as they show every scuff or bit of dust.

@C4tastrophe currently i have semi solid wood flooring over cement over some of the floor and slate tiles over the rest. It has all been down for 25 years and survived very heavy traffic but is very tired and shabby now and I would love a completely new look

@HandlesFruit hmmm. That's exactly what I hoped wouldn't happen.. i thought they were very durable and easy to maintain.

I once stayed in a surprisingly trendy air bnb, we had so much fun as it was really unexpected. We felt like we were in a scandi noir. It was all massive industrial windows and, more to the point, polished cement floors and counter tops. It was really cool. There's was actual polished cement though, I'm not familiar with the product in your pic. I didn't find it any more of a cleaning hassle than other hard flooring, but it is hard flooring, careful you don't end up the wrong character in a scandi noir.

So you have solid floors under the current flooring by the sounds of it.
You need to see how deep the new concrete needs to be.
We have this finish in the kitchen, only we have an actual pattern which must have been very expensive to create.
That floor in the pic is not really polished concrete, which is just flat grey. That stuff has some aggregate in it, the pebbles, and after it is set they run a grinder over it then seal it.
So many variables, get a company round to quote.

Nice looking but very hard should you fall.
Stay a few days in an airB&B with concrete floors and live on them. If you drop anything they shatter.
Your knees and joints will suffer - however you can always cover the mover again with floating wood or floating floors that have concrete look vinyl.

Mixed views

Also spotted these tiles.. a lot cheaper and probably more straightforward

That looks like a terrazzo floor.

We’re in the process of building a new house and will have polished concrete on the whole ground floor - just like
in the photo.

It’s very hard wearing and easy to look
after. It also works really well with underfloor heating - much better than with tiles or wooden flooring. One thing to think about though is acoustics - you definitely need to incorporate soft furnishings (rugs, curtains, artwork) as otherwise the room can be very echo-y and unpleasant.
