How much of bathroom walls should be tiled?

In the process of redoing our en suite and I'm not sure how of the room to have tiled! We're having a walk in shower and those two walls will be fully tiled of course. What I can't decide is whether to tile the remaining walls from floor to ceiling, halfway up or replaster and paint. I've never had a really lovely bathroom and I'd just like it to look amazing!

I tile the whole room.

I agree it’s personal preference. Sorry, not helpful!
personally I don’t really like fully tiled bathrooms, I find it too much. In our en suite we have tiles just behind the shower, above the sinks and behind the loo. In the main bathroom the shower and bath are separate and it’s not a huge room. As we would have needed tiles behind the shower, sink and bath anyway we just continued it all the way around but only half way up the walls outside of the shower.

In both rooms we have used the f&m modern emulsion paint on the walls so it’s bathroom friendly.

I used to have a fully tiled bathroom and it was great. When we did a renovation my builder convinced me that look is old fashioned and to have paint everywhere except around the shower.

I’m so cross that I fell for that!

The paint is only a year old but already needs work because of the steam from the shower and most importantly there are yucky stains on the painted wall next to the toilet. I assume this is from boy guests shaking themselves dry instead of using paper 🤮 but if there were tiles around the loo it would be a quick wipe down job, instead I’ll have to repaint.

We always fully file. This was our last one. Providing you don’t use light coloured grout, I think it looks much nicer.

I have just changed our bathroom from fully tiled to half tiled, two reasons for this my bathroom was really cold & I think having all the walls tiled made it even colder, the other reason being I can change the decor much easier I have wallpapered the top half but I can change to paint or different wallpaper if I fancy a change, the shower area is fully tiled.

You can do as much or as little as you want. Our larger bathroom is half tiled all the way round except where the shower is and painted a contrasting colour above. The smaller bathroom is tiled where the shower is and a small section behind the sink and the rest of the walls have the most beautiful wallpaper.

Both our bathrooms are fully tiled on all walls, floor to ceiling. So clean and so easy to clean.

@Reallybadidea
I have two tiled bathrooms and two not. In the fully tiled ones we used large format tiles that virtually butt up to each other so virtually no grout. We also have big mirrors built in above the sinks for light. We coordinate the flooring with the tiles which is easy to do at Porcelanosa. They have truly great tiles with texture and interest.

in our non tiled bathrooms, one has a freestanding bath and no shower. Wooden painted panels instead of tiles. Again bug mirror above sink. Other bathroom has tiles in shower but no others. Just a big fitted mirror all along the wall with two sinks. They are glass and sit on a glass plinth so it’s quite clean looking. Hope that gives you a few ideas. But mainly, large format and no huge grout lines!
