Where to fence this garden/driveway? *diagram*

Please excuse the drawing 🤣 absolutely nothing is to scale, quite clearly! 🙈

We have just moved house. We have young children so would love to have the back garden area secure so that they can go in and out the back door without being able to access the road at the front of the house.

We’re a bit stuck as to where to place the fence/gate for the garden. DH thinks from the back wall of the house to the corner of the garage. I’d rather the back door was within the fenced area so that the kids can come and go from the back garden without leaving the fenced in area.
The garage isn’t (and likely never will be!) used for cars - it’s garden furniture and toys etc.

Im thinking behind the first car in the driveway? Straight across from near the back door to the neighbours and then fence right up the side of the garage to fence along the back of the gardens. That way the back door, garage and garden can all be accessed in the fenced area? Or behind the second car and doing a bigger more decorative fence that completely separates the back and front of the property?

Any better suggestions or issues I haven’t thought of? 🙈

P.S...we absolutely don’t have 5 cars 🤣 we have 2. Just showing the length of the driveway 🤣

I'd do your way. Perhaps you could make sure there was enough space behind the fence for a car, just in case you ever need/want to hide one away next to the garage, and have big Hugh gates that stay shut and locked but leave the option to access garage down the line? So the gates act like a fence but keep your options open?

My mum has a similar type property.
She has large gates half way down the wall between the front and back door - so leave space for 1.5/2 cars in front of the garage and then put gates up. If you get large double gates then you can open them if you need extra parking space

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 27/02/2023 22:30

I think your idea is probably good, extra security too if you're going to have things like bikes/tools in the garage.

But if there's a reason to want the garage in the unfenced bit, could you fence here:

I would put it in one of these 2 positions or somewhere in between them

if the dimensions are vaguely similar to scale in your diagram you could do something quite stylish.

your gates go across in front of the garage like so, but with the exact size and position carefully calculated such that in the open position the left hand gate exactly lines up to the left hand corner of the garage, so that on the occasions when you sometimes need the gates open. the garden is still secure.

Our house layout is basically the same as yours, but the back door is parallel to the cars.

Our fence is where you've suggested.

I prefer it this way, because I can go into the garden looking like an absolute tramp and nobody can see me.

There was a time when our neighbours were changing the fences between their property and ours. When the old fences had come down, I felt so exposed! It was summer too, so the back door was open a lot.

CatOnTheChair · 27/02/2023 22:40

I would want the fence like the blue line suggestion, but we do actually put cars in garages, and I wouldn't want to have to open a gate too!
If you arexstaying long time, go for one of the red lines. If you want to sell son, blue line.

WrongSideOfLife · 27/02/2023 22:43

Ours is where @GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut suggests. It works well.

Jux · 27/02/2023 23:08

I'd go for your suggestion. Kids can get their own toys and run in and out of garage, turn it into a sort of Wendy House....

You build a car port on other side of fence to shelter the car if you were concerned about it.

if it is just for keeping kids safe for a few years (they will grow bigger & more sensible soon), then this is an easy option

Thanks all for your ideas 😊 I think behind car 1 or 2 is definitely the way we’ll go. I like the idea of being able to access the garage/storage while in the contained garden. I should have said, wherever we go across the driveway, it will be able to be opened incase we need the cars back there in future or incase we sell on and they would like to use the garage for cars 😊

Surely the obvious place is demented pixies level with the front door.

That seals off the back garden, and also a portion of the drive, which is useful if the kids want to play on the tarmac. Grass isn't great for everything.

Also useful if you have a dog.

Username24680 · 28/02/2023 15:19

@GasPanic Yeah I agree with you 👍🏻 I think that’s the obvious place!! Off to let DH know he’s been overruled by myself and Mumsnet 👏🏼🤣

@GasPanic Oh, and no dog 🤣 don’t let my DH be seeing that suggestion!! He still maintains that I’m mean for not allowing it and that our poor DC are growing up deprived without a dog 🙄🤣

I seemed to have agreed with everyone else. Red line with a single gate (cheaper option) or nice iron double gates on the green line. You can then park behind the gates for extra security, or just in front of them for ease.

I have exactly this setup. I went for gates just offset from front door. I don’t need the extra parking so actually went for a part fence, part gate. Also made sure it’s 6 ft tall. This actually gives quite a large space round the side of the house. Mine needs sorting out, but if you’ve got little kids would be a useful toddler biking space and I could see it as a bit of a child’s play area very easily

note, I set it back from the front wall to give me the option to add an electric charge point there if required
