Blinds, curtains or shutters for master bedroom in Victorian Terrace? (share your photos)

Hi all,

We've just started our bedroom renovation and as part of this need to update the window coverings. We live in a pretty standard Victorian terrace which has two windows on the same wall in the master bedroom. If anyone lives in a similar house would you be willing to share a photo of what you've done with the window coverings? We're pretty sure shutters are a no as we wouldn't be able to open them due to the furniture placement and the old owners put in massively oversized blinds which look terrible, so we're hoping to see photos of what people have done which looks nice to give us some inspiration.

Thanks!

We have blackout Roman blinds from blinds to go.

I don’t have a photo but in our last house with this layout we did matching floor-length curtains – white walls, black curtain poles, mustard yellow blackout curtains. Piece of art on the wall between the windows above the radiator – we had it here rather than underneath the windows so we could do floor-length.

We went for good quality textured roman blinds from Blinds2Go. Easy to fit yourself. They are not prominent in this pic as they are mean to be unobtrusive rather than a feature. Also we have a bay and a single window and decided that patterned would be too much overall.

We have a cream rug under the bed now too.

Blinds2Go do a nice range of patterned fabrics too.

If you only have single glazing I'd recommend curtains though.

We have the same as this except our radiators are under the windows. The heating isn’t on at night when the curtains are closed.

If you are overlooked I would consider half height plantation shutters or a sheer roller blind as well for privacy - means you can get dressed without having to shut the curtains and block all the light out.

Thanks for the replies so far! Our radiator is in the middle so now I’m thinking floor length curtains with a sheer roller blind for privacy (we face onto the road). Blind2go looks like it could be a good option!

And now we’re actually thinking blackout Roman blinds with a privacy film on the bottom half of the windows as the ones above are so lovely. If anyone else has these and is willing to share photos please do!

Always curtains. Blinds never look cosy enough for a bedroom.

I have a severe dust mite allergy and can't have too much fabric in my bedroom, so curtains are a no-no for me. Otherwise I agree!

I have a blackout roller blind with curtains too. I don't think a bedroom or lounge window looks 'finished' without curtains.

I do think it depends on the window! True timber sashes with brass fittings and fancy architraves look lovely standalone, and I love the look of them with the most minimal roller blind as possible. But there’s also something about drawing the curtains at dusk that feels nice and cocooning; or solid wooden shutters (NOT plantation): ideally I need a three-storey double-fronted Georgian rectory to experiment with as many different window treatments as possible.

OP, cafe curtains instead of privacy film are very in these days: a thin brass rod and a nice linen voile, so you can still push it aside for the view (assuming you have a nice view). Feels slightly less claustrophobic than privacy film.

I've just had wood Shaker panel shutters fitted in my bedroom. They block light and make the room warmer.

My shutters are bifold so it solves furniture issues as it's a small room.
