Diving a Bedroom

So have a three bedroom end of terrace and three children who we'd like to have their own rooms. Extending is definitely not an option. The biggest room has two windows but only the possibility of an entrance through one door. The space is big enough to make two box rooms. Has anybody done anything similar? Thinking a stud wall and two separate doors but not sure!

Obviously not diving! Rather dividing!

This turned out very differently than expected.

We did this with wardrobes and shelves one facing one way then the other facing the other. Managed to make it fill the high space with mdf.

CatOnTheChair · 24/02/2023 22:04

Yep. You need to make one room shorter, so you can fit in an internal hallway and both doors.
Very common round here, where the front bedroom is massive.

WandaWonder · 24/02/2023 22:07

Do you need council approval to do this?

Nat6999 · 24/02/2023 23:12

My dad converted a bedroom in to two for me & my brother when we were kids, the room was 17' × 11' before being done, had 2 windows & doors.

yummyscummymummy01 · 24/02/2023 23:28

Apparently in order for it to comply with building regs they need to have a window each. I don't think you need permission but will check.

CatontheChair how do they do they layout the internal corridor bit, do people leave the main door on and then have two doors afterwards?

I would just use wardrobes etc but I think realistically we'll never get a loft room so am thinking of a permanent change that'll take us through the teenage years.

My parents did that for me and my sister divided a big bedroom with stud wall and door...they did it when I was about 13/14 and its still going strong over 20 years on and one room is my dad's office now and the other still my sisters room as I moved out

CellophaneFlower · 25/02/2023 08:04

Can you post a floor plan?

CatOnTheChair · 25/02/2023 08:39

Usually, turn the original door into a square archway, then put in 2 additional doors at 90 degrees to each other.

4kinell · 25/02/2023 08:45

We did this years ago when kids were small , we did exactly as catonthechair said , took door off left internal frame left it as an archway and two doors at 90 degrees . Built a stud wall .Had a window in each room , left original radiator in one room and ran another one off it for second room . Had to put another light in as well . Worked really well

yummyscummymummy01 · 25/02/2023 19:04

So here's the floor plan. The rooms would be small but at least they'd have their own space

We did this a couple of years ago - the original door is the one that goes into the smaller room now. Handily the room was set up for this easily as had a radiator under each window and 2 independent light switches already. This plan is actually from next door but one as several neighbours have done it to the front bedroom. The smaller room is definitely a box room so we have a midi sleeper in there with drawers and a pull out desk underneath.

We did this - had a long bedroom with 2 windows and got a builder to put up a stud wall to divide it. The only problem was that one child had to go through the other (much younger) dc’s bedroom but as they were so young it wasn’t a problem. It gave us another 3 years in that house, which I still miss terribly! We live in a conservation area so option to extend or go into the loft.
We didn’t need to notify anyone or change council tax bands or anything because the further bedroom as accessed through the other one. When we sold the estate agents ignored the fact the bedroom had been divided, and the new people immediately removed the stud wall!

yummyscummymummy01 · 26/02/2023 10:51

Hadn't even thought about council tax. I very much doubt this will add any value, probably the opposite! It's just best for us and we live in London and can't afford a four bedroom house here or to extend. I think if it does add value it'll be reassessed if it's sold.

I know someone who did this for exactly the same purposes as you. They reconfigured the larger bedroom to make two smaller bedrooms and extended into the loft to create one master bedroom and increased the value significantly. It sold significantly higher than other neighbouring properties.

FoodFestfFork · 09/06/2023 08:15

If you make the doors sliding ones you'd gain even more space in each room.
