Save me from my own head - do the upstairs carpets need to match the downstairs??

Hi

Manky old carpets on stairs and bedroom, want to replace with a pretty light neutral. Downstairs, the lightish grey carpets from previous owners are not too bad and we can’t justify replacing them with a light colour given all the felt tip pens and fruit shoots knocking around.

Does it matter that upstairs will be different to downstairs? I guess I’m thinking ahead to when we sell in around 2-3 years time.

What do you have in the hallway? I wouldn't have one colour in the hall and another on the stairs if they're connected. If you've got wooden flooring or tiles in the hall but grey carpet in the living room, do what you like with the stairs

We have one colour for hall stairs and landing, and then another colour downstairs and a different one upstairs

Yeah it’s wood laminate in the hall. But the hall is very narrow so actually only 1- 1.5 meters I’d say between the two different coloured carpets.

I think it's perfectly fine to have different carpet on the stairs/hall vs downstairs rooms. If nothing else, you might well want a different type of carpet there. Stairs take quite a beating, so hardwearing is key. In rooms you live in, warmth and feeling underfoot are more important.

I'd have the same carpet on the stairs and landing, but whether that matches anywhere else doesn't matter at all (although I'd go for something that 'goes', so it's not jarring to the eye, even if it's not the same).

Thanks everyone

Depends on style of house. I have a Victorian, where you can get away with more. I have orangey/brown tiles in dining room and kitchen, beige carpet in living room. Between those rooms I have coir matting fitted into my small hallway by the front door. Leading off that I have striped stair carpet and then a plain beige carpet that works with the stair carpet throughout the rest of the upstairs. So no, things don't have to match, just compliment each other in similar tones.

Nice title. I clicked on this thread because I thought it was about pubes.
