En-suite possibility - floor plan attached

Where might an en-suite go here? It seems the simplest option would be to cut the family bathroom in half and make bedroom 2 the master. Are there any other possibilities? In terms of waste access there is a downstairs loo at the back of bedroom one and another underneath the airing cupboard.

You could push the wall of Bedroom 3 back, not by much, just so that you could make the odd shape at the front into the ensuite?

Honestly, I don’t think you have enough room unless you convert bed4 into an ensuite to bed2.

Splitting the family bathroom in two will result in two tiny bathrooms. They will be cramped and unpleasant, with no storage and lots of humidity. And the en-suite toilet will be so close to the bed that you will hear/smell everything. Not nice.

Similar to PP, but I think realistically this is all you could do. It will mean losing 3ft or so of bedroom 3, but it will still be bigger than many box rooms.

You probably need all your bedrooms. But we turned Bedroom 4 into an ensuite and converted the loft into Bedroom 4. It was a lovely ensuite.

Knock down the airing cupboard and make that space the doorway to the master bedroom. You’d then have a space to the right as you enter where the current doorway is to put up stud walls and create a small shower room.

Personally I think an en-suite is only worth it if it is luxurious.

if you are OK with two shower rooms, the splitting the family bathroom would work. but if you want a bath, it would be tight. our house has tiny bathrooms but they work just fine.

or this doesn't require too much moving of walls.

Thank you for these ideas. We are actually used to a tiny bathroom so this one seems palatial, which is why I thought about splitting it. The airing cupboard area is definitely worth a thought though.

Do you really need the en-suite?

CellophaneFlower · 24/02/2023 09:36

If you split the bathroom, I assume the family bathroom would be windowless?

Sometimes an extra bathroom is practical though. Not put in as a luxury just to have an "en-suite".

Grumpybutfunny · 24/02/2023 09:56

Do you need it closed off to the master bedroom? What about putting a floating wall in front of the current wardrobe and using that space as behind it as ensuit? Then knock the airing cupboard onto the main bedroom as a walkthrough wardrobe

If you really need an en-suite I would go with this split, but then relocate the main bathroom into the smaller space of a bed 3 and turn the bathroom into a bigger bedroom.

WombatChocolate · 24/02/2023 15:46

It it helps, the smallest en-suite shower room dimensions are 0.8m x 2.4m.

This gives you space to have a shower cubicle at one end and look at the other end and tiny basin opposite the door.

This would be okay for an en-suite, but not as a family bathroom size.

Often the tiniest en-suites are only installed if there is no 2nd loo already in the house. If you have a downstairs loo, it’s questionable whether a tiny en-suite which then also makes the main bathroom much smaller is worth it.

What are the dimensions of the bathroom?
