I feel sorry for my house.

I Co own a house with a family member. As I have to be away for work, my family member mainly stays there and I stay for a about a week every 8 weeks or so.
The family member is a bit chaotic and a bit of a whirlwind. Whilst not a full blown hoarder they have accumulated bits of clutter everywhere and the house is looking unkempt and uncared for.

It is not an option to sell at the moment and I don't want to tell the peraon to move out as it is a mutual benefit. It is an asset and I plan to move there in my retirement in about 10 to 15 years. However I feel he doesn't deserve to live in this house and neglect it in this way. It's a massive house but his clutter has spread everywhere. He has no sense of style and it has deteriorated aesthetically from when we bought it, though structurally it is okay.

I don't know if there are any magic ideas but I just feel really sorry for the house. And I'm not there for any length of time to make a big impact.

Help!

Not sure what to advise other than seeing about coming to a mutual agreement as you own the property too.

If you won't sell and get your own place instead then there's nothing you can do about how he lives his life. Sounds like it will just keep filling up with stuff.

Not completely sure what this arrangement is, but I wouldn’t waste time feeling sorry for bricks and mortar! How are you planning to move in- with him/ her? I guess you should be aware that accumulated clutter can pose a few risks, depending on how bad it is. Like mice, rats, moths damp, fire etc. Are you expecting them to move all the stuff out before you move in? You have a right to be able to protect an asset. Also again I am not sure whether it’s so bad it might start affecting the neighbours but that’s something to bear in mind if you plan to live there at some point (and if it’s spoiling your time there now).
