How to make best use of this room

Hi

I’m having trouble determining how best to use this double aspect room. There is large sliding doors on one side and bay windows on the other.

I currently have the living room with a TV in the bay window section but don’t know what to locate in the other portion that would:

allow both sections to enjoy the double aspect views
to be calm enough to not disturb / distract whoever is using either section.

Thank you

Sounds like two seperate rooms would work better for you? Could you put doors in halfway down so you can seperate the two halves when you want to?

Do you wfh? You could have one end as the 'day' room, set up for an office but with lots of storage so you can hide all the gubbins away at the end of the day. The other end is then the 'evening' room, set up for TV, relaxing, family time.
Which end is which depends on how the light falls during the day (eg avoid glare on computer and/or TV screen).
It means that (a) you don't waste a bedroom on a home study and (b) you still get the light and airiness of the dual aspect room.

I’m using a spare bedroom as an office to stop being disturbed by or disturbing family watching TV in the afternoon.

How would you maintain a seamless decor for what would be separate rooms. The living room is nice, formalish.

I'd have two separate seating areas. one with the TV and the bay window. the other with space for board games / piano / lego / bookshelves or whatever other activities you enjoy when not watching TV.

I don’t have a panic but one would fit perfectly there. Board games is a nice idea. We do a lot of drawing and painting so that might work too

Do you have a dining table anywhere? We have a dining room but my lounge is big (similar length to yours but 5m wide everywhere). We have a bay window too. We have found a table invaluable. It’s semi open plan to the kitchen so it’s a great chat area and although I don’t have bookcases in that area but it would really work. Or get wall units with cupboards if you want to hide anything away. You could look at an open shelving room divider too.

There is another space, connected to the kitchen, that’s 9 by 4 where the dining table and social sitting is located.

I’m starting to think this house is too big with more space than we know what to do with.

I get so fed up trying to make sense of the space.

don't think about the space, think about what activities you & your family like to do. what would make you all happy and laughing together? or what would be a calm space for you to enjoy/chill/relax? then make the space do your favourite activity.

Mine was very similar to this and I've actually reinstated the divider wall (it was previously a through lounge). Now we have a family room at the back and a more formal living room at the front. Really pleased we did it as previously the front was largely wasted space.

LibertyLily · 22/02/2023 00:46

You can never have too much space...imho, anyway!

If you have another room for dining and socialising, I'd add floor to ceiling book shelves in the 'beautiful scenery' end of this space, plus a table for games etc with some comfortable seating so it becomes a library/games room.

We've done something similar in a room roughly this size (although our table is at the end without the view as we wanted our sofas there) as we also have additional seating/room for dining elsewhere.

Put an arch (can be made of wooden battens and mdf - doesn't have to actually be arched) in the middle to visually separate the spaces (like in a Victorian terrace); you can paint each section in different shades of the same colour, which will give continuity and separation. The use is up to you and what your hobbies/needs are. Could be a reading room, or a music room (for listening or playing) or a games room or an art room, or some combination of those.

You can add glass or concertina doors, if you want total separation.

TakeMe2Insanity · 22/02/2023 06:54

We have similar. We have the same decor in terms of paint colour and flooring. Bay end we have formal dinning table where we play board games do homework etc, then glass pocket doors, on the other side a living room. Winter we keep the doors shut to conserve heat. Summer we keep them open for air flow.

Geneticsbunny · 22/02/2023 09:14

How about a second dining table for craft/ board games/ hobbies where you leave stuff out so you don't have to clear it away every time you eat?

@Neverknowinglyunderbold
Ok. I love space. Our house is quite big. I have 2 dining tables! 3 if I count the bar table in the kitchen.

If you look at house design magazines, you will often see two areas of seating in a sitting room. One with sofas and one with east chairs. You make use of each end of the room with a different vibe. Make one end the reading end. Or build in office type furniture. We actually have that in our hall (big open hall) but it’s vital for us. All closes away when not in use.

I think if you look at web sites such as Homes and Gardens you will find great ideas. I wouldn’t make it one room but I would zone it.

Neverknowinglyunderbold · 22/02/2023 20:54

I like the idea of floor to ceiling bookcase with relaxing chairs
